3 Wood or 2 Iron (hybrid)

After getting my bargain of the century (Adams A3 Iron Set, Graphite shaft) which I've now played about 5 rounds with and they are indeed superb for me. My 3/4 iron shots have really helped my game. I'm hitting them equally as well as my 7/8 irons which were probably my best clubs, not sure if it's the club or shafts or a mixture of the two, either way i'm happy! Hit my best round for a long long time last week.

So it got me thinking, for some reason my 3 wood (from the fairway) is my most inconsistent club, so much so that I rarely use it from the turf and sacrifice some yardage and take my 3 iron.

It got me thinking, should I;

a) get an Adams A3 hybrid 2 iron as I hit the 3 & 4 so well, it's got 16 degree of loft so not much difference to a 3 wood and a lie of 58.25" v 58.5", shaft is shorter though at 40.75" compared to around 42" for a 15 degree 3 wood so would still be sacrificing a few yards.

b) try out some other 3 woods, Adams do a similar looking one to the hybrids but slightly bigger.

Be interested in your thoughts on either a or b and if b and suggestions as to 3 woods from the turf.....

Thanks

Darren.

If it was me it would depend what you want from the club.  I have both  a 3 iron hybrid and a 3 wood.  I use both of the tee, depending on length and accuracy required.  I use both into greens, but i only use the hybrid out of the rough, and this is where it really come into its own!!  A three wood is quite easy to choke down on for the added accuracy and length of a hybrid, but you cant get anymore out of a hybrid than what there is!!

 So the question for me and my game would be do I want the added help out of the rough?  Or the added 10-20 yards??

Thanks Pingfan,

I have a 3 & 4 hybrid for rough duties, I do on occasions use the 3 wood from the tee, but not that often as my driving is Ok at the mo.

I hit my 3 iron hybrid around 180 yards (i'm not that big a hitter as you can tell).

What I stuggle with is the longish par 4's, my driving is pretty good, tend to hit a slight draw and get about 225/230 yards to land so depending on conditions can be anywhere between 230 and 270 yards down the fairway, now on a 470 yard par 4 I've got at least 200 to go which with the 3iron hybrid is a step to far although I would be accurate in line if not in distance and I just know with the 3 wood i'll hit it to the green maybe once in three (if i'm lucky).

So ideally, if I could hit the 2 iron hybrid 200 yards then happy days, but I suspect as I hit the 3 iron hybrid around 180 I may still be some yardage short.

Maybe I just need to practice the 3 wood from three turf! Or get fitted for a 3 wood maybe...........

I once read a mag with tips from Nick Dougerty.  He showed how to land fairway woods on the green.  check out on the internet for some tips and then you could be sorted!!

I use a 15 degree recovery instead of my 3 wood just now. I just find it easier to hit (most of the time!) and the distance isn't that different. You are best using what is most comfortable and that includes mentally.

ps - on the really long seconds try your driver. In the last 2 weeks I have hit my Cobra LD (huge 460 brick on a stick) from the deck 3 times. Each one has been a cracker round about the 220 mark. Low with a slight fade as you would expect. I have no fear to use this shot when required now.
