I am thinking of buying a set of Callaway X forged irons, and the problem I have is the flex choice. I previously understood a 6 in the Project x 100 was approaching extra stiff, and when I demo'd this shaft and it did feel a little too harsh for me, although it was extremely accurate. The pro who I was going to buy the irons from told me the 6 was stiff and the 5 was regular, but I'm sure I read where the actual stiff x 100 shaft equalled 5.7. Can anyone help me please on this matter, I know the best thing to do is to try them out, and just get the one that feels good and goes good, but that is easier said than done, as I can't find a demo to try where I live.

I would be wary of the pro who says "I have one set and they are perfect for YOU". How convenient ?

Can't he get you some others to try out ? If not then maybe you need to drive out a bit and try some out. Remember you are likely to keep these irons for years so taking a day or to to drive to the right place with choice and get fitted could pay dividends.

I have recently discovered Clays GC in north Wales, a centre of excellence and they are great. Lots of players from my club are travelling over 80 miles round trip to get fitted there because they are so helpful and professional.

Good advice Pengwyn, but the bloke hasn't kidded me as I know deep down he's just a salesman trying to make a few quid for himself, not that there's anything wrong in that. Like you say, I don't want to be getting a new set fo irons only to be part exchanging them in a couple of months, it was just the info on the shaft that I was querying, and also wondered if there is a 5.5 flex in it.

ProjectX play abit stiffer than they say so go for a 5 or even a4.5 if u can find them.I have the old xtour's which are great, i have a swing speed of 72 to 75 mph with the irons which in most shafts is regular, i have just fitted the new dg hi- launch in r300 and have gained half a club as i get a better launch trajectory. Also if they are just the projectx they will fly very low, depending on how u hit a ball this can work against u, if they are the Flighted ones u should be a bit better off. Get ur swingspeed checked, most people swing slower than they think and get too stiffer shaft which causes loss of distance(opposite of what u want) and ur ball will never reach the peak of its flight and come in low.... a bugger to stop on summer greens.......

Thanks RB, I'll try and have a demo with a 5, I hit the 6 quite high and straight but it didn't feel very good, (as though any slight swing fault would have been severely punished) which is important to me, although I know no shaft is magic. At present I use DG R400, which suit me down to the ground, but it might cost too much to have them made up.

I keep saying I'm going to get my swing speed checked, but what puts me off is this. I use a stiff Accuflex Creation in my driver, and I absolutely love it, but I've just seen an advert stating it's for golfers with a minimum swing speed of 106 MPH. I wouldn't have thought that mine was as much as that, but as I said previously I love it.

My point is, if I go by the recomendations I would using a regular shaft, and I don't think that I could hit my driver any more consistant than I do now. Hope this makes sense to you.

My driver speed is 95mph, it depends what manufacturer u choose, some im a reg some im a stiff. It depends what u want to achieve..... i hit a low ball so i always look for a shaft with a soft tip which promotes a higher ball flight. U can get shafts with a stiff tip and softer butt and vice versa ,both do different things, it all depends on how u want to flight the shot. Another thing to look at is torque... lower the torque the more the tip resists twisting and u get tighter shot dispersion(usually fast swingers)but for some people they can feel like a coal poker. If u need any more info ive got a book here full of shaft specs, give me a shout. hth

That torque theory explains why my Harrison Pro 2.5 stiff shaft feels a bit boardy, although it goes pretty well on the odd occasion I use it just for a change. Personally I don't care how well my clubs go, it's important that they feel good, as that's where most of the enjoyment is for me. Thanks for the info RB, and yes if I need any help on the technical stuff I'll get back to you.

I've tried out the X-forged irons too, and one thing to bear in mind is that the stock shaft is 'Project X Flighted', not the original Project X. Therefore comparisons may be difficult.

I've haven't hit the original Project X myself but have heard that a flex of 6.0 will be pretty damn stiff, probably approaching X100. This is probably why some companys have begun  offering Project X 5.5 'Not flighted', e.g. the new Cobra Pro irons and the Mizuno irons now offer them as a 'stock' option according to their websites.

My impressions of the Project X flighted (6.0 or stiff) where that they were suprisingly easy to load. I'd put them just below S300's on the stiffness scale. FWIW I thought they were pretty good option for those of us stuck between R300 and S300 on the Dynamic gold scale as they made the long irons of the X-forged seem very easy to get up and away.
