After leaving my driver safely in the boot of my car for the last 3 rounds my scores have really tumbled. I actually managed an 83 (par 72 SSS 70) which is by far my best round this year (22 handicap).

Hitting almost every fairway on the par 4/5's with my 3 wood from the tee and getting reasonable distance (200/210 yards, sometimes slightly more) it's been a revelation not spending so much time looking for balls in the rough! and my second shot just getting back onto the short stuff.

Was talking to the club pro and he's going to spend an hour with me going through some different driver head/shaft combinations so watch this space.

I also mentioned my inconsistency on hitting the 3 wood fro the deck, so as I had a spare space in my bag he lent me a mizuno F-60 4 wood for my last round.

All i can say is get me one of those! From the deck it was brilliant, on the round I think I hit it 5/6 times from the deck almost perfectly (well as perfect as I hit anyway), on the 18th which is a par 4 425yards, 3 wood around 235 (with run)  4 wood smack bang in the middle of the green and a 15ft putt for my birdie!

So it did get me thinking, IF I can get a driver that I can actually keep on the short stuff more often than not then maybe a 4 wood instead of 3 is the way to go.

Not many manufacturers seem to do 4 woods though, so not a lot to compare the F-60 with. Any suggestions?

Also does anyone else carry a 4 wood rather than a 3?

Me too...

I normally carry a 3 and 5 wood in addition to the Driver.

My home course has par 5s too long to reach in two and some shorter par 4s which don't need a driver.

I have taken out a 4 wood demo (G10) in the last two rounds and stuck the gap wedge back in the bag. It's long enough of the fairway and the tee and a nice "go to" club.

Working for me!

I carry a 4 as it meant that I didn't need both the 3 and 5 and could carry another wedge. Mine is a Benross V5, which has been very naughty recently. However as I have finally got round to having lessons this inconsistentcy was mainly due to my swing inconsistency rather than the club! As the swing is now strating to feel more natural the club is working again (at least at the range!) and is really superb. I liked the G10 as well, but at the price I couldn't justify it, especially as the V5 is similar, with an excellent shaft and at about half the price! I haven't tried the F-60 though, but I would say that you should certainly try out a Benross (V6's are also meant to be good and have the moveable weights if you like that sort of thing!). The V5's headcover is even orange like the G10's, so looks a bit like it in the bag!

If you're looking for a cheapo 4 wood, you could do worse than this one I found on ebay -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Benross-S-4-4-wood-17-degree-reg-flex_W0QQitemZ130232713850QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item130232713850&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I have to stress that I honestly have nothing to do with this item at all, it was simply one that I came across whilst perusing t'internet and remembered this thread!

I have a TM R7 Steel 4-wood, and like you, I love it - it is generally great when hitting it off the deck (much better than a 3-wood/long iron and longer than a hybrid) and have even taken to using it on a couple of long par 3's I play as the ball flight is such that it land reasonably softly.

That said, they are tricky to find. I got mine online from Direct Golf having been to one of their stores for quick bash on the range, but other than that I have not come across too many. I think Callaway do a Big Bertha, but other than that I drew a blank.
