I love my 3 wood!

After perservering with my 3 wood from the fairway for the past 3-4 weeks (i've played about 15 rounds in that time) as well as hours of practice on the range things have really clicked.

I played today and all bar 1 of my 3 wood fairway shots went where i wanted (the other a slight fade when I meant to go straight), additionally i've been using it fom the tee and am really enjoying not walking from the tee to the rough to try to find my wayward shot with the driver. I wasn't in the rough once today!

My only gripe is distance, I'm more than happy with the distance I get for a three wood, but it just isn't quite enough to get to those long par 4's/par 5's in 2 from the tee (using 3 wood twice). I can just about manage 420/430 yards in all, very consistent 190/200 from the fairway (not sure why longer from the tee!).

I've never really got on with my driver at all, in fact any driver apart from the smaller headed one's from 15-20 years ago! I probably will go for a fitting and see if that helps but can't help but think a lot of my problem stems from the head size.

Are there smaller headed drivers out there? (I haven't seen them!) or is it woth trying out a strong 3 wood, i'm sure if they made a 2 wood it'd be perfect!

there are a few smaller headed drivers available on the market. also look out for 3+ woods or 13* ones.

Only hit 1 driver tonight - wayward! luckily no boondai on that hole. For some reason i can't hit the 3 wood the first time i hit it, then it all comes good. Not straight everytime, but in no danger off the tee. usually 15-20yds shorter than a decent drive. Adds up to some happy golfing. The good crisp irons i'm hitting help a lot though.

Id advise to try a weak driver/strong 3 wood. Weak driver will have a longer shaft so will prob go longer. I have tried a 13* driver (Sumo Lucky 13) and it goes well. Bit too high for my liking so I stick with a 10.5*. The 13 was very easy to hit and compared to my 15* 3 wood was probably 25 yards further.

hold the front page..........

Lesson today, my driver can go straight and long!!!! Lets see if it works on the course though before I get too excited. Apparently i'd do better with a different shaft though and a tad more loft (mine's a 10.5 currently, suggests at least 11 possibly right up to 13)............
