Saturday 12th (Tinsley Park Golf Course) – Sunday 13th July 2008 (Beauchief Golf Course)
This 36 hole competition is open to male, female and juniors and NO official handicap is required. You can enter as an individual or in teams of 3. If you enter as a team you will also be automatically entered into the individual event.
£30 to enter as an individual or £35 per person for a team of 3.
The prize presentation will take place on Sunday evening at Beauchief Golf Course.

How does that work with people with 'No official handicap'? Oh I play off 28, and then proceed to come in and take the prizes. I applaud you for opening it up to everyone but you are surely putting off the golfers with proper handicaps? Or do most of the people that play the courses not have handicaps? Sounds like a fun event all the same, I organise a yearly weekend away to Sheffield and we always play Beauchief on the Sat, it's a decent enough track for a public course, always played in Sept though never in the summer.  £30 to enter a tournament alongside players with "no official handicap" - I might just as well set fire to three £10 notes. Thanks but no thanks.

To maintain fairness and an even playing field throughout the tournament, players wishing to play the Sheffield open without an official handicap will be asked for their estimated handicap prior to each round and on completion their score will be assessed and their handicap will be amended as necessary.
Since the first SIV Golf Open in 2004 we have allowed golfers with or without official handicaps attracting over 100 competitors each year. Golfers without an official handicap rarely play in competitions and this is our way of introducing the casual golfer to competitions in the hope that they will join one of our golf clubs. Allowing golfers to enter without an official handicap was a concern but the procedure previously mentioned has shown it works and golfers with official handicaps who have entered in previous years are confident that the competition is fair.
This decision has been made to open up to the competition to people who do not have an official golf handicap with a golf club but enjoy playing golf and are interested in competing in this years Sheffield Open. <!-- / message -->

I can see problems with attracting some club golfers but I fancy this as I play with a society of mates a lot of who do not have an official handicap and this kind of thing is ideal for them. Factor in a Sat night on the lash then it sounds appealing!! Will have to go for it in 2009 though as a bit late notice for this year.

I think it's a great idea, given that apparently less than 1/4 of golfers are members of clubs (English Club Golfer Issue 27) this is a great opportunity of competitive golf for those players.

Out of intereste what were the results and did the winner have an official handicap? Always of interest as these events always justify the entry of people without official handicas and get defensive when people with club handicaps query them but it would be interesting to see what actually won the day to see of the worries of bandits turning up and winning the prizes is fact or fiction.

Don It's not until next weekend. The bandits issue, though, raised it's ugly head at member's clubs Invitation Days and Open events too. The only solution I feel is to cut back on the levels of prizes available. I can honestly say that whenever I play in an Invitation Day I am unconcerned what the prizes are, it's an opportunity to play a different course in pleasant company. I don't think reducing the value of prizes would affect the entry numbers and would reduce the banditry. Re. the Sheffield comp at £30 for 2 separate rounds of golf I think they have pitched it pretty well and at that level I wouldn't have thought the prizes would be over the top. I have no vested interest here, but wish the initiative luck and I too will be interested to see the results.

Half asleep on a Monday morning..... As I said I will probably play in this next year, coinicide it with a trip to Sheffield to revisit University haunts. Just interested in what will win the day.

 the two courses used are munis that SIV (sheffield international venues) have took over the lease of - a few years back. They were both ok in standard before SIV, but since SIV have taken over they have improved. SIV have just took the lease over in my course at chesterfield and improvements have already been noted, it is a pity the leisure pass they offer @ 43.99/ month (play as much golf - four courses and gym sheffield only ) is too far for myself and other members to travel. SIV are well organised and appear to have their integrity - so far they have done everything they have said - albeit early days . So i believe if they say it will work it probably will.

@neil fryer That's interesting, Neil, I looked at their website and saw the 43.99 deal which I thought was a great offer, wish Leeds would do the same. We have some good munis in Leeds but to tie it in with the sports centres would be great. I hope their initiative pays off.

prov x it is a great offer, but it is a shame for us lot (out of the way, in chesterfield,)i hope that SIV take over our leisure centre and we can use the facilities more. there is a fact though ... if a golfer took up the offer, only 5% bothered going to the gym, however, with four courses to choose from, i dont know if i would(if i lived closer)
