Guys,

Been looking for a new Driver and I've been hearing nothing but good things about the Ping G2 driver....

How does it compare the alternatives in the price bracket?

Its good value and probably the pick of the bunch in its price bracket. There are better drivers though if willing to spend a bit more

Like what Custard?

R7 without a doubt and the Ignite. The Ignite is the longest driver i have hit but the R7 is the best. Some people say its a gimmick and thats TM bring out drivers too often. Bottom line is TM are at the front of driver technology and are always advancing. They have made the best drivers for some years now

I'd say go with the Ping. I know two guys who have ditched their R7s for G2s.

The R7 is a great driver no doubt. Especially in TP guise with more weights. I've tried it and wasn't greatly impressed. However, I do know many that believe it's the best driver on the market.

With a swing as inconsistent as mine, the adjustable weight settings wouldn't be much help - I'd need to know in advance what swing flaw I was going to produce each time !!

I've read all the rave reviews and thought I'd try it out against my TM R7,teed up identical balls on each tee and hit with both drivers(yes I know I should only be hitting one ball but I so wanted a good comparison).
R7 won on every hole by about 10-15 yards and about the same for accuracy..
Wanted the ping to do it but the R7 will be staying in the bag for now, although I think I'll give the ping another go tomorrow..

Same with me Neil. No comparison imo

Is it the driver thats good or the fact that you get the choice of top end shafts not just oem? I reckon if you put a top end shaft (matched to your swing) into virtually any decent driver head that is pleasing to you on the eye & you will have a really great piece of kit.

Totally agree with the shaft issue three stab,my pro only has the demo G2 with graffaloy regular shaft and I'd really like to try it with the Aldila Nv's or the Ping stock shaft...
The only way to get a fair comparrison is to go to a demo day and try them against each other or take a chance and just buy one that you fancy but I've made that expensive mistake before....

ive binned my old shafts for UST Pro Force 65's stiff Tip

pretty fast swing, but shaft gives better feedback and more consistant strikes

so i go for the better shaft idea

Although there is no doubting that the R7 is a good Driver, I honestly don't think anyone would claim it is £150-£200 better than the Ping G2 with NV65 shaft.
I too know many guys at my club who have ditched the R7 and are now playing the G2, (most of them go with the NV, closely followed by ProLaunch). I have read that the stock shaft is also pretty good and fits somewhere between the other two options in terms of ball flight.

R7 is alot cheaper now Rob so not that much a price difference. Also, have hit the G2 with both the Prolaunch and NV and imo its not a patch on the R7 so the extra money is worth it. You pay for what you get!

Cheapest price I have seen for the G2 is still in excess of £300 though! G2 can be had for as little as £170!(with ProLaunch or NV65 shaft at no extra cost!).
Certainly worth consideration, unless of course money is no object!!

Sorry, should have "read cheapest price I have seen for the R7......."

Not sure where your looking at your prices but the R7 is now £279 with delivery at most retailers on pricerunner, yes I think the G2 is a very good driver at a very good price bit imho the R7 is still the benchmark....

The R7 has had many good things said about it, but the thing that puts me off with Taylormade is the fact that they basically bring out 2 or 3 new drivers every year.

TaylorMade bringing out a new driver every 5 minutes, IMHO, is a *good* thing.

Firstly, they are pushing the boundaries of driver technology.

Secondly, it means you can pick up a fantastic club for not very much 6 months after launch. It's up to you to resist the "brand new shiny thing".

As for advice, if I ever break my Grafalloy Blue shafted Cobra SS370, or it lasts until 2008, I'll be getting an R7 (or R15 by then :-) as they are a fantastic bit of kit and I'd love to be able to tinker with the settings ;-)

I agree it's good but £100 better than the others? Particularly if you get fitted with the right shaft, loft etc.
I seriously doubt it!

I play off 6 and I'm using a PingG2 with Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue Stiff shaft and 8.5 loft. Great value for money, good distance and more forgving than the R7 - better grip as well (although you can always change this..)I'd say the Ping is the best selling driver in my Golf Club at present.

Just thought I'd update on the G2 progress, recently had a club-builder friend recommend a new shaft to me and on his say so I swapped out the NV65 reg for a UST Accra Tour 60 in reg flex.
Now the G2 is an absolute bomb! Sweet as a nut and deadly accurate, a month down the line and this driver just keeps on getting better!
Best 170 pounds I ever spent!
