My local shop has new Hippo Giant 400cc driver for £99 (was £250). Has anyone any experience of it? Is it longer and/straighter? Certainly seems a good price for a titanium headed driver.

Similar to the Integra driver of the same size.
Reports suggest longer but problems with head size and shaft torque mean not necessarily straighter Ste.

Got one, I'm using a custom Golfsmith 350CM at the moment but ocassionally I play the Hippo 400cc. Easy length and with the 2 degree closed face not too hard to keep in the fairway. The secret is to swing within yourself, you do not need to pile on the power for these drivers, power drives lead to erratic shots.

I have a howson tourmaster driver and hit around 280 yds. I recently bought a hippo giant expecting to drive it off the range. oh dear ,barely hit it 200 when it went strait bomerang slices, aarghh, Got stiffer shaft true tempEl 70 s , 250 still slicing, now waiting for Platinum X flex. Why does every one reccommend softer shafts and less torque for a slice? Surely if you drive thro the ball hard a soft shaft leaves the head behind, and the more torque leaves the face open i.e. BIG SLICE. I tried to counter this by toeing in , all i succeeded in doing was boring holes thro the 75 yd marker.

I have to admit that the Hippo Giant is quite a feat in engineering, they make something so big yet its still a lump of crap. I have a stiff shaft in it, but im convinced that the idiots at Hippo just couldn't quite spell Senior, still they got the first letter right.

It is very forgiving but that is its only real assit. The size of the head creates so much torque on the shaft that a slice is inevitable. If you do buy this club put a nice stiff shaft in it, which will cost you another £50 at least, meaning that you are paying £150, when you could get a Taylor made 300 for £200 which beats the hell out of a hippo.

Having said this, do you want to but mine for £40?

These big headed drivers need a different technique - I had the same problems initially with my Powerbilt Citation titanium driver (only 330cc head)
Tee 'em up higher than normal, play the ball level with your left big toe and hit the ball on the up - this gives the head chance to square and creates an awesome blast of extra power.
Try it - it definately worked for me.

Oh - I'm also convinced that the Hippo head is made by the same manufacturer as Integra, they look identical.

You can actually now pick these up fir £59 in American Golf Discount. Didn't buy one though. Tried it and didn't like it. I am just not a fan of these woks on sticks. I now have a second hand Taylor Made 300ti which works nicely. Not too big a head on it and flys nicely when hit well.

I had a Mizuno small steel headed driver that worked brilliantly for about a year - then suddenly I started hitting high looping hooks with it.
It flew nicely when thrown.

Hi Guys, seeing as some of you chaps popped over to have a chat on the Ladies European Tour WebSite I thought I'd come and have a look at what you lot where up to (usual nosey female!!).
Interesting discussion on drivers. Just over a year ago I tried my dad's 3+ Steelhead (firm shaft) on holiday and, well, he hasn't had it back since. My golf developed to the point where I 'thought' I needed a driver. But I'll be darned if I can find ANY driver men's or womens that outstrips this beauty. It goes straight, it goes long..
I'm rarely out of play with this dude. I won a Taylor Made 200 (regular shaft) the other week and thought (wahey!!) but spent more time pulling with that than I do when I go out!! 8)
Mind you I've got my eye on my dad's driver that matches this 3-wood.... haven't tried that one yet..
Drive safely... Zoe

Thanks for dropping by, Zoe - always good to get an insight from the girls who can really play, of which we have a few, though most are a little shy! Keeps the chauvinists in their place. So it's a Callaway Steelhead 3+ 'dude' is it that keeps you in play and stops you from pulling? Sounds like dad made a good investment to keep his daughter from getting into trouble.

Recently got a pro select Ti 400 driver with a nice yellow and purple UST shaft for £49.99 ..
It looks kinder wierd behind the ball at address but you soon get used to it, and does it go when you get it out of the middle ,i don't got that far on me hols
and even of centre which there are quite a few it still flys.. best thing since sliced bread..
Like Alan said you do need to tee the big ones high and watch them fly...and all for under fifty quid...
