Lots of chat about new stuff which I like here but what about the stuff that got you into the game.
Mine was a half set of Slazenger B51s bought second hand from the pro shop in Aberystwyth for £50. I was later donated the 4,6 and 8 irons by an uncle. And they were petron impalas
Can't remember what the wood was, only that it was a 3wood with holes in the grip where it has been well used before I got hold of it.
Used to hit "commandos" bought from Argos for £4.99 a dozen.
Aaah....happy days

Hi Pat. Thats how I started with some old second-hand clubs then when the bug bit I bought some decent ones.

Darryl, same here - these were my dad's old irons, and I used them when I started in the 80's.

the very things ! .... Hogan Director Irons (passed down from Grandfather) ... cut down in length to suit a budding 14 year old junior in 1977 :)

Interesting topic Pat. I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy telling you about their starter club memories.
Lynx Tigress Irons and Lynx Tigress Woods. Bought off the shelf to take lessons with. Chosen by the sales guy because I'd no idea what to get, didn't even know what the difference between a wood and an iron was. Duh.
That was 2 years ago. Still play with the exact same clubs.
And I still reckon that all clubs are basically the same, some are just more expensive than others depending on how much the company has spent on the marketing budget!
Bah Humbug.

one thing that is apparent LGL is that whilst some manufacturers are pushing the boundary of undercut perimeter weighting and making clubs that look like some kids metalwork GCSE project , others are going back down the traditional route of making clubs look like (and play like) clubs again ! ..... what comes around goes around et al ....... :)

 |
McAlan . yes those slazengers were also my dads. They must have been all the rage 30 years ago ?
|
 |
Darryl - you're into collecting old & vintage clubs yeah ? ..... whatever you do keep hold of anything like those Slazengers & such like , it's where the 'future' club collectors money is !

My first 'set' were Petron Impala blades. The pro at the local muni sold these individually so bought just 3 irons a 4 wood to start with then added an extra club every couple of months as and when I could afford. My putter was a real cheapy at the local market and was finally sold about five years ago (always kept it because it was superb on really fast greens)

First club was a Falcon 7 iron (blade), which my dad bought, passed to my brother, who in turn passed it to me. I had nowhere to put it in my last house so it was on display next to my PC. My brother in law spyed it, next thing I know I'm getting golf lessons for my birthday, and the bug bit.

I bought a second hand set of mitsushiba graphite shafted irons, mizuno bag and a ping B60 putter for £100 from a private sale in Chapeltown (Leeds) about 10 years ago. I left the wife and kids in the car, made sure they locked the doors then went into an Aladdins cave of golf gear. It only ocurred to me six months later they might not have been strictly Kosher! At the time I just thought I had a bargain. Mind you - the head fell off the 9 iron mid stroke and just missed my head - divine retribution !

I also played with the yellow balls that were more costly than commandos. Penfold " Tornados" I think. As hard as the Devils head!.
My mates clubs were Slazenger Accupowers. An early cavity back, 4,6,8 and PW and his drver was a Lee Trevino "Green Tree". He was a commando user too.
Thanks for all the feed back. This has been my fisrt ever forum post so cheers.

Northwestern Golf (now famous for the "Is it any good" Plus 10 Driver) Hubert Green forged blades circa early 80's.
I got them years ago (before I even liked golf - long story) and used them initially when addiction took over.
Gave them to a friend shortly after but I have used them recently. Believe you me, the Mizuno TP-9's in comparison are forgiveness' own self!
