The dreaded lunge at the ball.

Hi Guys,

I have a problem that only occurs when I set a ball in front of me.

The problem is that I tend to lunge at the ball to hit it rather than just concentrating on swinging the club.

The problem never occurs when I have a practice swing or when I'm practicing with my hinged trainer club.

In fact even with my hinged trainer club I will try to hit the ball rather just swing it even though I know that the club is going to break down long before the head gets to the ball.

This is a head problem and it's driving me insane trying to overcome it.

Does anyone out there have any tips or techniques they use to overcome this tendency?

A related problem I have is with visualisation.

For the life of me I can't clearly visualise any shot.

I feel if I could crack visualisation then the dread lunge at the ball would disappear or at least be greatly reduced.

Over to you guys, I need all the help I can get.

For a start, Ken dump that hinged trainer club - it ain't natural and it makes you think about too many things at once.
Set up to the ball and (assuming you're right handed) think about your right shoulder. Imagine someone is standing behind you and pulling the seam of the shirt on your right shoulder towards them. To get a good shoulder turn, the right shoulder needs to go back, not up. Complete that shoulder turn - and your backswing - every time and the club will return square to the club. Don't go looking to visualise the shot before you hit it - concentrate on clubface square to the back of the ball. John Jacobs told me that and there hasn't been a better coach in the last 50 years.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the tips.
I'll start to implement them at the driving range when I come back from holiday.

Contrary to your advice on the hinged club I will keep that.

I find it great for practicing swing plane and tempo and think it has made a difference to my game over the long term.

Ken,
Same problem with me. Sometimes worse than others. Lesson with pro methinks is the answer.

You two sound like 'Unhinged and Bracket' the old music hall combo. Ken (what do you play off by the way?) are you still using the implement or have you started swinging smoothly without artificial aids?

By the way, golfers with tempo don't lunge!

I don't think it is a tempo thing at all Bob.

Ken -This is for you if any benefit:

I believe I have "found" my problem having just played much better the last 2 rounds-it's just a question of whether I am kidding myself or not or it's just a fluke!

However.... what I have found is that I have been inadvertently moving my head too much without realising it. i.e. Following
the club head back by moving head at same time in effort to get weight on right side.
This combined with a bit of "lifting" the club too early has made me rise in the backswing and inevitably dip back to get to the ball on the downswing. Similarly I didn't have problem with practice swings bcause I don't think the deliberate start move is replicated.

My pro on a initial assessmnet picked it up straight away-yet I couldn't "feel" this movement.

What happens is that on a good day you can get away with it through good hand/eye co-ordination...other times it can be a complete disaster hence I can vary 15 shots from one round to next.

What I have done over the last two games is really concnetrate on chin up and keeping head as passive as poss. In reallty whilst I think it is still it still moves back a couple of inches -but not the 12-14 inches it was before. I have tried keeping head
still on drives/irons/chips/putts and It has had a positive effect on all shots.

Ken, stand in front of patio doors so that the vertical bar disects your head on the reflection. Take a backswing and see if your head moves much -if it does you may well have the same "lunge" issue as me.

Hope this helps -If not sorry wasted your time and maybe you have some suggestions!

Hi Geof,

I'm off to see my pro on Monday night.

This guy makes a fortune off me, it takes him five minutes to fix whatever ails me and then just stands and watches me hit balls for twenty five minutes.

But I tell you I would pay double just for those five golden minutes of advice.

My dreaded lunge has developed since I bought my new Adams driver and fairways, so it is the head, inside, not external move ment.

I'll let you know how things go over the next couple of weeks.

Hi Geoff,

Yeah only a bunch of sick, perverted, Calvinistic bastards like the Scots could have come up with something like it.

Played today-never get off to a good start-but always play better back 9.
So what do I do?

First 7 holes in 32 then a bad back 9 end up 2 over 93.

It's like a golfer in there somewhere trying to get out...

But just as things look better...get back down!!
