Hi There,

I'm looking for some advise and feedback from anyone who has made the jump from OS cavity backed irons to to a more traditional style of iron.

My main reason for wanting to change/upgrade, is that my irons look huge when addressing the ball (Especially from the 7 iron down)

I was looking at maybe going for a set of Nike Pro combo's or the TM combo's (As this should still offer forgivness in the longer irons).

Alternativly, as I have got along very well with the Pings and was contemplating going for the S59's where I will be able to mix & match the long irons from the I3 set (3-6) and the shorter irons from the S59 set (7-Pw).

My only concern in going for the S59/I3 combination is that the difference between the I3 OS and S59's will be huge at address and the different club weighting/size may be detrimental to my game.

Has anyone else gone down this route or would it be beneficial to opt for a matching combo set from the start.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Eddo,
I have just recently upgraded my irons to the mx23,s and couldnt be happier with them. my old set were macgregor doctorx which were probaly the uglist irons you would wish to see, I use to keep my cover on my bag zipped up on the course in case they frightened children! The heads were like shovels, i was very surprised how quickly I adapted to my new irons never use to carry the 3 or 4 irons but now have even ditched the 5 wood in favour of using the 3 or 4 irons from the tee or fairway.
What ever you choose make sure you try a variety of clubs before you choose and whatever your comfortable with then get them custom fitted.

Best advice is to get youself to as many demo days as possible before making the jump. I have never tried combo sets but have played blades when younger, but for past 10 or more years I have always played small to midsize cavities.
Personal final choice came down to between
Taylormade RAC LT
Callaway Fusion or X18 pro
Titleist 704CB (which is what I have now got because I happened to spot a set second hand)
I never got to try Mizuno and Unfortunately never got to demo S59 except in a net would love to try to though.
If the 704s dont work out I am thinking about the Fusion if they drop in price.

Thanks for the replies guys.

My short list is: -

Ping S59
Nike Combo
TM Combo
Titleist 690 CB
TM RAC LT
Mixuno MP30

The thought of going for the S59's was basicaly so I could retain the I3's and mix & match.

My main concern is the size difference between the I3 & S59 which may just be too great.

I do intend to demo as many of these as possible but before I do I would like to hear from others who have gone through this kind of change in the past.

I changed about a year ago from TM 320's to Srixon i302's muscleback blades in the belief that I'm a better player than I actually am.
The Srixon's have very little offset and I've struggled with them for over now thinking they would come good, but alas no more I tested a set of TM LT 11's and the diffrence is like night and day. What a lovely iron to hit, bit more offset and not too lumpy looking like some others.
Wsa struggling hitting a weak fade turning into a slice with the Srixon's, now hitting a long straight shot with Tm's and the 4 iron is a dream to hit also.

So if anyone's interested in a set of Srixon's I wont be hard to deal with!!!!!

Eddo,
Went through a similar ish change around 2 months back.

Ping S59 (I liked these a lot, only really got beat by MP32's)
Nike Combo (They where OK but something was missing and I can't say what)
TM Combo (Didn't try these)
Titleist 690 CB (Good but not what I expected, certainly didn't have as soft a feel off the face as the Mizuno's)
TM RAC LT (OK and that's about it for me, as for low trajectory, compared to what? flew very high for me)
Mizuno MP30 (Everyone says that the cavity make them good for mid handicapper down, I found it impossible to get a good strike on these. It appeared that the club itself just didn't suit my swing)

A club that you don't mention is the TM TP, this club was very good but at the time it was retailing at £600 which I wasn't prepared to pay, even though the money wasn't a limiting factor.

Mizuno MP32's, not only do they look good, they play good and are remarkably easy to hit, in my opinion they are far far easier than the MP30's. Ignore the "low single figure only" comments. Try them yourself because they really are easy.

I have a combo set of Ping i3s. O-Size 3,4,5 irons and Blades for the rest. Bought them on EBay but really do like the mixture....I get the forgiveness with the long irons and the control with the blades.

Would probably consider the S59s if I were to replace them.

SBL - Thanks for throwing another set of irons in the mix :-)) I'd not considdered the TM TP.

I have been slightly put off both the Nikes and TM LT's as people have said the shafts on the Nike aren't the best around and that the TM LT's didn't seem to have the lower trajectory they were expecting. (I will however demo these before making the final decision)

Looking at the Mizuno's, I will demo the MP32's as well as the MP30's (I thought I'd be able to get a better deal on the MP30's as they are the older set, allowing my to keep the I3's)

Aremcc - Glad to hear I'm not the only one to think about making my own combo set up..As a matter of interest, how did your combination affect your game and what hcp do you play to ?

Thanks again for all of your replies...
