Hi All. I've got Steelhead III 4+ & 7 woods. Been playing about 3 years, now off 19.5. When I first started, like most people I hit a big slice. These fairways helped me straighten it out a bit and I have loved them. The 7 wood in particular goes like a rocket - 220yds is not uncommon off the fairway.

I had resigned myself to hitting a consistent fade, when, to my surprise I began to hit a lovely draw shape. I am now hitting everything much longer with a really penetrating flight and lots of roll. Only problem is my fairways. With the 4+ wood particularly, from a nice draw shape I am now hitting a massive hook and can't seem to straighten it up.
I have read that these clubs have a 'leftward bias', and I have noticed that they sit closed at address.

Has anyone experienced this? If so can you offer any advice to help a poor hooker? ;-)
I may even consider swapping them for a more 'neutral' fw combo if anyone's got a tempting offer to make!

Have you had your swing speed checked. As you have become more experienced it is likely that your swing speed has improved. If you play with shafts that are too soft for you they will have a tendency to hook.

The other thing is in what you say, if the clubs looked closed at address then they probably are!! that coupled with an in to out swing will lead to too much right to left. Last thing to check is ball position, with everything else that has gone before if the ball is to far forward in the stance by the time the club reaches it the clubhead will have closed.

Hi Jim. No, I haven't had my swing speed checked, I hit a 7 iron about 165 if that helps.
The shafts feel ok, they're 'uniflex' steel, which are meant to get stiffer the faster you swing.
I've experimented with ball position, moved it back when I was hitting a lot of straight pulls, then forward a bit because I started pushing it straight right. It's settled at about 1" inside left heel, this seems about right to me but it just keeps hooking!
Maybe I'm staying behind it too much and not 'moving through the ball'?
If I deliberately weaken my grip to open the face the ball just goes too high.

I was told by a callaway rep that the uniflex shaft is, in fact, just a normal shaft which plays a little stiffer than a regular flex. The theory is that this will fit the majority of weekend golfers. Not sure bout it really holding up to big hitters.
As to your problem, as stated before too whippy a shaft may be causing hooks. You've also eliminated the strong left hand. You may want to look at swing path; coming too far on the inside may be producing excessive draw spin.
If all else fails try a nike T60. Doesn't have as much heel weighting as other retail fw's so, I have found, does not want to go left as much.
Hope this helps...

Cheers Alex. Have got reg. steel in my irons, just hit a nice draw with them.

I have tried the Uniflex on the Cally Fusion irons certainly felt and played no different in my hands than the DG300 regulars on the X18 Pros I tried the same day.

Ball position is about small changes of no more than about half an inch at a time to find the right position for you. For me a 3 wood position off a tee is about 3" inches inside left heel and offf the fairway even further back but everbody s differnt in this respect.
If you are hitting a seven iron that far I would have a swing speed check personally.

Cheers Jim.

Lessons. I also have a massive hook, and a course of lessons helped me a treat.
