This is my first club set. I don't expect to upgrade soon because I don't have access to the market(I live in Greece). So I can't afford to make a wrong choice.
Need more feedback to help me decide from the following shortlist (all clubs about the same price):

a) Ram Concept X (graphite/steel, utility club included)
b) MD Golf Surefire Box Set (graphite/steel)
c) Wilson 1200 GC (all steel)
d) Wilson X-31 (graphite/steel)

I have read good reviews about all the above companies in term of value for money. What set would you choose and why?

for myself I would go for second hand set of forged bladed irons such as an old set of ram tour grinds, macgregors or even wilson staffs.
I understand blades arn't everyones idea of a nice feeling iron but I like the feedback they give and buying second hand enables you to pick up very good clubs at peanut prices, if your after cavity backed iron try looking for a second hand set of big berthas or even a set of pings ect you'll find these much easier and on the whole better than the ones listed above at about the same price.

Shaft wise I'd stay clear of graphites, once again this is simply a personal choice but many people including myself simply can't get on with them.

Hope this helps and keep swinging ;0)

Just a thought Harry, are these just sets of irons, if so have you considered putters & woods? Afraid I can't comment on the particular clubs you have listed having never tried them, I would normally say try before you buy, but appreciate that may be a bit difficult. I started out with the Cougar starter set that American Golf used to sell, £200, but included irons, bag, putter, driver , fairway woods & balls. I've upgraded little by little over the past 3 years, rather than shell out on complete new kit. But found that whilst the woods, putter etc. weren't to hot, the irons were really good, and have lasted well, and after all thats the most expensive bit to change.

Why do you keep starting a new thread asking the same question? This is the third now.

Your other two are still on page 1!

Thank you for the answers, so far. My choices (a-d) are complete golf sets. Don't want a second hand set.
Anyone else commenting only for these specific sets(a-d)?

(Niblick: Your are very observant!)

I'm not observant... I'm the one who's suggested MD in both the previous two attempts! :D

And I'm sticking to it... out of those options I'd definitely pick MD.

Hi Harry,

I would definitely reccomend the Wilson X-31. I have a set myself with the steel shafts. It's a great set and at a good price (£199).

My previous set was a Donnay, which made me almst give up trying to play golf completely. Last month I went to a driving range after not bothering for a year and couldn't hit anything but bad shots, they looked bad and they felt bad too.

I was leaving when I saw a set of Wilson X-31 on offer with a free stand bag for £199 and a set of Mizuno Mp-17 for £299 for just the irons.

I tried both and couldn't tell the difference. I actually managed to hit the ball and it felt nice in my hands.

As a novice I wasn't prepared to spend nearly £300 for just irons, so I bought the Wilsons.

Today, a month later after coaching and practising on the driving range I have managed to shoot under 100 for the first time. I went around the course mainly using the 3i off the tee for par 4s.

This set has given me so much confidence and feel that I can now hit the ball off most lies and can use even the long irons most of the time.

I wished I had bought it last year.

A couple of days ago, you could get that MD Sure Fire Set for £50 from www.ebuyer.com along with various other MD bargains (I bought 2 Players wedges for £30!) but I can't seem to find them anymore. Maybe, they're sold out but for £50 you can't go wrong, esp. as online golf etc are still flogging them for £200 a set!

Just looked on ebuyer and the MD Surefire set is still on at £50.

I would however suggest that you consider a set with one, or maybe even two utility clubs as these will be easier to hit than your 3 & 4 irons. I know the Ram has a utility.

Just out of interest Harry...next to your name you have a '2'. Is that your handicap?
If it is, I'm staggered by this whole post!

I buy my first club set and I have a handicap 2? Of course not! Moreover don't forget that I live in Greece. If a had a handicap 2, I would have been a national champion (so underdeveloped is the game here!)

Thank god for that. Thought I was going bonkers for a while!
