Wonder if any of you can identify with this.

Played a club match yesterday away at another local club. Lovely early autumn sunshine, course is in great nick, been looking forward to it all week, warmed up and ready to go for our appointed slot.

My partner steps up first, duck hook into a ditch. I pull a 3 wood for safety, nice relaxed swing.. big hoick of a hook that disappears into the trees... One down.

Somehow i managed a half on the second getting up and down after another hooked tee shot, but this only delayed things. We were 5 down after 6 holes and comfortably cruising to a record defeat.  The nadir came two holes later. I'd just birdied a hole to get it back to 4 down, but next hole normal service is resumed and i'm out of play before i get within 100 yards of the green. My partner is on the green in 2, both of our opponents are in trouble, so we're looking set for a return to 3 down and back in the game........ he four putted from 20 feet . So instead of 3 down we walk off 5 down again....

We eventually lost 6 and 5.  and then proceeded to par our way in with some ease.

god this is an annoying game.  Absolutely no idea what went wrong yesterday - hooks, slices, thins, duffs, you name it, they all came out to play. 12 handicap my arse, i'd have struggled to play to 36 yesterady.  Arrrrrggghhhhhh!!!!!

I used to be able to relate to this but never since I've gone from novice to 11 in 20 years.

Huh!  I can beat that easily.  Playing singles matchplay I was 9 down after 9 and lost the 10th.

I've had starts almost as bad before.  I played one knockout match against an old boy who doesn't hit it much over 150 with his driver.  I hooked my ball OB on the first hole. Second hole he picked up. Third hole i hooked 2 balls OB. 4th hole he hit a scruffy drive, thinned an iron from 150 yards out which rattled the pin and dropped in.  i was 3 down after 5 holes and i hadn't even had a putt yet!   Yes i lost, but i managed to keep the game alive until the 16th that day.
