If you have an iphone a pretty good app to add is "redlaser"
all you have to do is open it (it opens the camera) and then "scan" a barcode - use the camera and the guidelines to place the barcode in there.
Within seconds will tell you best places to buy etc..... ok so not handy for Tesco baked beans, but anything electrical / books etc is great.
