Jim Furyk is expected to be unveiled as US Ryder Cup captain in 2020 ahead of Fred Couples.

The decision has been made by a committee - which includes Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and 2016 winning captain Davis Love - and will see Fuyk pip Couples to the prize.

The 46-year-old was assistant captain at Hazeltine, where the US beat Europe, and was a member of the “task force”, set-up to end the run of three defeats in a row in 2014.

“That committee is in place for a reason,” Furyk said last month. “If they decide 2018, 2020, 2022, whenever, that I’m the right person, I would love to have that job.”

The American is currently 37th in the golf world rankings, and became the first player to shoot a 58 on the PGA Tour in August.

Europe has named Thomas Bjorn as its captain.
