Ryan Giggs was the talk of the 19th hole during Worsley Golf Club's latest Men's Captain Qualifier 2 tournament as the Manchester United legend was disqualified from the 145-man event for not paying his £5 entry fee.
Players were meant to pay a fiver in cash the day before but Giggs and his friend Tony Camilleri went ahead with their rounds without paying.
But when the results were published on the Worsley Golf Club website, Giggs - who plays off a 14 handicap - was ranked 144th with a 'DQ' by his name and a message reading 'No comp fee paid'.
"It caused a bit of a giggle in the clubhouse," said one of the competitors.
"Ryan’s got a few bob in the bank so it has made us laugh. He’s a popular lad around the club but rules are rules.
"Anyone entering the contest is meant to pay a fiver in cash in the club shop. I'm sure it was just a mistake, but he played on anyway with his pal.
"It put a smile on people's faces seeing him at the bottom of the leaderboard and I'm sure he'll see the funny side of it."
Giggs, one of the most decorated footballers in history with 13 Premier League winner's medals, has been a member of the £950-a-year golf club in Eccles for years.
Worsley Golf Club has since sent round an email to its members saying: "Can we please remind all members that to enter any competition you need to pay the required amount in cash the day before.
"We have been informed that this is becoming a regular issue with a number of members not having enough cash with them.”
