Stenson ends three-year wait for victory

Once ranked as a high as World No.4 in 2009, Henrik Stenson admits it’s been a rough ride to get back to the top.

The 36-year-old Swede, now ranked 71st, last popped champagne corks in 2009 at the Players Championship and he he surged home for a three-shot triumph at Serengeti Golf & Wildlife Estate.

“I’ve had to fight hard the last few years on the course and I’m very pleased to pick up this win,” said the seven-time European Tour champion.

“When it takes that long between wins you wonder if there will be another. You’ve just got to fight hard and put the work in.

“In this game you need to put a lot of effort in to get something back. I’m very relieved to have won this one.”

Although finding 60% of the fairways found wasn’t particularly impressive, Stenson used his TaylorMade R11S to devastating effect with an average of 309 yards off the tee.

But just as we’ve seen with numerous players this season, Stenson opts for a mixed bag that includes Callaway Diablo Octane fairway wood, RAZR X Tour irons, Cleveland 588 wedges and Piretti putter.

Stenson, who wears FootJoy Icon footwear and plays Titleist Pro V1x ball, looked back to his best with his irons by ranking second in greens in regulation on 84.7%.

Stenson will look to continue his resurgent form at this week’s season-ending Dubai World Championship.

Great to see Henrik back in the winner's enclosure. His career is a real roller coaster, he doesn't seem to do average - he's either winning all over the place and riding high or struggling to break 80. Is it something in his swing, or mentality, that is the cause?

Or maybe it's because he's gotten rid of Fanny

Ah, I see. He's stopped fannying about and has knuckled down?
