Van Zyl starts as red-hot favourite

Fresh off a tie for second and victory in his last two competitive outings, Jaco Van Zyl will attempt to land maiden European Tour glory at the inaugural Tshwane Open this week.

The 34-year South African secured his 11th Sunshine Tour title at last week’s Dimension Data Pro-Am and heads to the sixth and final event to be held in South Africa this season.

Four of the previous five tournaments have been won by South Africans, with Charl Schwartzel (Alfred Dunhill Championship), Louis Oosthuizen (Volvo Golf Champions), Richard Sterne (Joburg Open) and, most recently, Darren Fichardt (Africa Open) all triumphing in their homeland.

And Van Zyl, who starts as the red-hot favourite this week, is confident of adding his name to the illustrious list.

“I’ve been getting better every week and now I’m really looking forward to this tournament,” he said.

“To play here on the back of a win gives me great confidence that I can get my first victory on the European Tour.”

Other players in the field include major winners Michael Campbell and Darren Clarke, as well as victorious Ryder Cup captains Colin Montgomerie and Jose Maria Olazabal.

Fichardt, who pipped Van Zyl to the winning line two weeks ago, will also fancy his chances of going back-to-back, as too Trevor Fisher Jnr, who tied sixth behind Richard Sterne in the recent Joburg Open.

The inaugural Tshwane Open, which carries a first prize of €237,750, will be co-sanctioned by The European and Sunshine Tours.
