If you're passionate about golf, chances are you will play in all weathers - apart from snow, fog and the occasional typhoon that whips across middle England.
Keeping warm and dry are essential, while being able to swing the club with ease. Bottom line is that waterproofs have to be functional more than stylish.
Who cares if you look like an arctic explorer if you're playing a December stableford in a steady drizzle or a winter league matchplay in minus temperatures?
Stuburt Golf, best known for the Profile S shoes worn by the games hottest player David Howell, asked me to try their latest product since they dipped their toes into the waterproof clothing market and I'm impressed.
The have managed to integrate all the best bits of worldwide waterproof clothing over recent years into their Profile suit and delivered it at a price that UK consumers can afford.
I was particularly impressed by trousers, which I tend to wear on the course between November and March, even when it's not raining. I have discovered over the years, that warmth comes from keeping the legs weather-proof. I can wear non-restrictive normal clothing above the waist in most dry conditions as long as my legs are covered with a good pair of wind and waterproof trousers.
And these are good, with a unique adjustable length system, of tiny press studs to prevent the trouser-bottoms dragging in the mud. Side zips and velcro tabs also help to keep clothing clean and assist easy 'disrobing'. They have a fly zip, tie cord at the waist and thermal pockets, even at the back.
As well as novel, adjustable velcro side flaps, the jacket features, the Dri-Back membrane system which
has been developed to offer protection while allowing vapour to escape. It includes a waterproof flexible panel between the shoulder blades to keep the interior dry while preventing clothing from storing condensation.
The full front zip is a little firm to manipulate but tough seams help keep water out and an interior pocket will at least keep the scorecard or any valuables dry. I've never understood the need for zips on side pockets but at least these don't scratch you hands as you dip in for that elusive pitchmark repairer or favourite tee.
It even has what seems to be the essential fashion accessory - zip-off sleeves - for those cool mornings where you need freedom with minimal protection.
The only negative observation I'd make, is the obtrusive logo on the adjustable cuff of the left sleeve as 'Dri-BACK' screams at me as I look down to address every shot. But it's a minor criticism in what is, overall a good quality waterproof suit.

Summary: | Other jackets may be quieter as you swing or more attractive as an alternative top to wear down the pub. But Stuburt has produced a functional waterproof suit at a good value price, which does its job for those who want to play golf in almost all weathers. |
