Padraig Harrington's victory at Carnoustie in the Open Championship - when he beat Sergio Garcia in a four-hole playoff - was not only the first by a European since 1999 it earned Wilson Staff equipment yet another major title.
Previous winners of The Open using Wilson Staff equipment include Gene Sarazen (1932), Sam Snead (1946), Arnold Palmer (1961 and 1962), Johnny Miller (1976), John Daly (1995) and Paul Lawrie also won at Carnoustie in eight years ago.
Harrington used a 7.5 degree
Wilson Staff Dd6+ driver,
Wilson Staff Fw6 (5-wood),
Fh6 hybrid (19-degrees),
Wilson Staff Pi-5 (Performance irons (4-iron to pitching wedge) and Wilson Staff Tw7 wedges (52 and 60-degree).
The only other equipment in his Wilson Staff Tour bag was a Callaway X-Hot 3-wood,
Odyssey White Hot 2-ball blade putter and
Titleist ProV1x ball.
The combination helped set up one of the greatest finishes in Open history. Harrington began the day six shots off the pace, but quickly moved into contention with four birdies in the first eleven holes, before ripping his 4-iron 226-yards to 12 feet and calmly rolling in the eagle putt. It moved him to nine under par took the outright lead for the first time.
As the drama unfolded, the championship went to extra holes and a birdie at the first of them proved crucial and the Irishman hung on to claim the Claret Jug.
Said Wilson Staff's business director for Europe Doug Wright: "We congratulate Padraig on his breakthrough victory, a win that truly touched every member of the Wilson Golf team. He's a worker, and he earned this victory through hard work and dedication. No player on Tour better exemplifies his focus and determination and his success mirrors the success that we are striving to achieve every day. We're very proud of him.”
Harrington, who moves up to No.6 in the world, has been a Wilson Staff professional since 1998, is instrumental in the development of the new Wilson Staff irons, drivers, hybrids and wedges.
