Not content with limiting the trampoline effect of club faces, golf authorities are now on a mission to restrict clubhead sizes on drivers.
The United States Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club also propose limitations on the length of shafts, beginning January 1, 2004.
Clubheads would be limited to 460 cubic centimetres, face depth to 2.8 inches and width, from clubhead heel to the toe - five inches. Shafts would be limited to 48 inches- though broomhandle putters would be exempt.
Manufacturers have been given until July 11 - the week before The Open Championship at Royal St Georges, Sandwich - to respond before the proposal is implemented.
However, clubs currently in use that will be non-conforming if the new legislation goes through can be used in tournaments and for handicap purposes for one year, ending December 31, 2004.

Already there are a number of drivers with heads over 500cc - mostly made by smaller manufacturers in the US - while the biggest head available in Europe, we believe, is the Integra 450, selling at just under £200.
The King Cobra SS 430 Unlimited - is one of the hottest-selling drivers on the planet - available at £245.
Initial reaction from manufacturers and retailers is favourable, with one store-owner commenting: "Consumers were telling us that heads were getting too big and I think the industry will accept this."
Others agree with establishing a limit - even though it's easier to make bigger heads from beta titanium. And there's little advantage to being able to strike a golf ball with a 460cc head.
What do you think? Does using a big-headed driver make the game easier 0r merely more enjoyable because you're not going to mishit so many tee shots? Tell us on the Forum.
