Fred heads for the Loch

Couples - first visit to Loch Lomond.

Fred Couples and Loch Lomond - it's a match made in heaven. And the American smooth swinger has confirmed that he will compete in the Scottish Open beside the gorgeous loch from July 10-13.

Couples, notorious for suffering from a back complaint, has never before fitted the event into his pre-Open schedule in fear of risking injury in the week before the year's first major.

But such has been his re-generated form this year - with victory in the Houston Open and other high finishes - he reckons it's time he played the course so many have raved about.

The 1992 US Masters champion joins fellow Americans Phil Mickelson, John Daly, Chad Campbell, Ben Crane, Jerry Pate, Tim Petrovic, John Rollins and newly turned pro Ricky Barnes, in the field.

"I have heard so many great things about Loch Lomond and about the tournament, that I am really looking forward to experience the magic for myself," says Couples.

Colin Montgomerie, will lead the Scottish challenge in the £2.2 million event. He claimed his first professional victory on home soil when he won at Loch Lomond in 1999.

Other Scots in the line-up Sam Torrance, Alistair Forsyth, Sandy Lyle and Stephen Gallacher who represents Loch Lomond on Tour.

Defending will be Argentinian Eduardo Romero, who beat Freddie Jacobson of Sweden in a play-off last year.

Ticket sales for the event are going well, with savings available on tickets booked before June 30. All spectators will get free parking. For further details call the Ticket Hotline on 01436 65 55 59 or send an email to tournament@lochlomond.com

Surely Loch Lomond must be the ultimate golf day out? Spectacular, exclusive course, stunning views, billiard table greens, the chance to lose at least a box of balls.

It would certainly be my choice - though a weekend break at Augusta National would run it a close second.

What about you? What's your ultimate golf day? Throw in a fantasy one, too, if you like.
