In the second of our series we continue our trip through the alphabet to discover courses you might not have thought of for a day out, but which we strongly recommend.

Has three courses, Buddon Links, Burnside and Championship, which is renowned as one of the world's greats. The Open venue has a distinctive aura about it, when you consider the world's finest have trodden the fairways and greens. Sixth hole recently re-named "Hogan's Alley" by 1999 Open winner Paul Lawrie in memory of Ben Hogan's historic Open win at the course 50 years ago.

Cambridgeshire Moat House

Played here with the legendary Christy O'Connor Sr in a 1974 pro-am not long after it opened and was so nervous I hardly noticed how good a course it was. Now it's a mature parkland with elevated tees and well protected greens. Next to Top-Flite/Spalding HQ and close to the A14/M11 junction north of Cambridge and well worth a visit.

Surrounded by the Irish Sea on three sides it's set on the Isle of Man's Langness Peninsula. Great driving holes across rocks to ultra fast greens and fairways. A must-play for the travelling golfer.

Chart Hills

Has got more sand than Morecombe Bay with bunkers peppering many fairways - a product of designer Nick Faldo's sadistic humour. Superbly kept greens and a great venue for a day out in rural Kent.

Collingtree Park

Set beside the A43/M1 junction 15, it was designed by the legendary Johnny Miller and has hosted several European and Seniors Tour events. Feature hole is the par-5 18th and if you can hit the island green in two (or even three) shots you can call yourself a real golfer.

The Cowal, Dunoon

Well worth the ferry trip across the Clyde Estuary to sample this moorland/parkland course perched above the town with panoramic views. Designed by James Braid it's a course that tests every club in your bag as well as your course management.

A favourite golf break destination near Ticehurst, East Sussex (off the A30) with two courses - the original parkland and the Ian Woosnam. Both meander through bluebell woodland with streams and valleys. The hotel has been recently updated and provides a real golf atmosphere.

De Vere Blackpool.

Built on a council rubbish tip but transformed by the formidable Allis/Clark design team, it has a links feel with lakes providing extra hazards. You can leave the kids at the nearby Stanley Park Zoo and they won't miss you for four hours!

De Vere Slaley Hall Hotel

Another double venue with the Priestman (designed by Neil Coles) and the Hunting (Dave Thomas) courses. Both are challenging yet distinctive and have been used for pro Tour events, through forest and moorland and traversing streams and valleys.

Donnington Valley

A few minutes north of Newbury close to the M4, the course, at times squeezes into narrow fairways and tight doglegs. But other parts allow you to open your shoulders and admire the views. Warm welcome in the clubhouse.

Dukes Course, St Andrews

Overlooks St Andrews Bay in Fife and blends links with moorland and parkland. Designed by five times Open winner Peter Thomson it's a great alternative to the seaside links which have made the town famous.

Dunstanburgh Castle

Rolling links designed by James Braid with stunning views over Embleton Bay north of Alnwick in Northumberland. A neighbour of mine plays here every year and never fails to come back buzzing with the delight of having played it again.
