Wilson Staff: Irons, drivers revealed in Munich

As a dress rehearsal for the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando in January, many of the European equipment manufacturers have been revealing their launch plans for next season in Munich at the Golf Europe trade show.

One of the biggest moves is likely to be made by Wilson. Earlier in the year the company announced it was re-branding to embrace the Wilson Staff logo and to celebrate 90 years in the business.

And with Ryder Cup hero Padraig Harrington as its figurehead, it is planning to launch a range of new equipment including three sets of irons, two drivers and 12 putter models.

The Wilson Staff Pi5 (Performance) irons and Di5(Distance) iron are aimed at the accomplished golfer seeking maximum distance and ultimate forgiveness. The W/S Fi5 (Forged) irons will be welcomed by lower handicappers who prefer a classic-looking club.

Harrington is currently playing the Wilson Staff Pd5 (Performance) driver and has had much input into its development along with the Dd5 (Distance) driver. Both feature Nano technology, which claims to strength both heads and shafts without adding weight.

There are also plans to introduce a range of KC Series putters, which you can customise to your own specification, wedges and four types of Wilson Staff golf ball.

Callaway has already revealed news of its Heavenwood Hybrids fairway metals and White Steel putters (indeed samples arrived at Golfmagic for testing this morning) but at Munich they revealed their long-awaited Big Bertha Fusion, X-18 and X-18 Pro Series irons.

Its innovative Notch Weighting System claims to make the clubs even more forgiving by redistributing weight towards the heel and toe.

And with Phil Mickelson now on board to help develop a new range of products, Callaway is growing in confidence in its pursuit of a men's major championship with a set of its irons. Callaway is also introducing a Big Bertha 454 driver.

While Mizuno's latest irons, driver and utility clubs and TaylorMade's new driver have already been identified, there was also news of fresh products to come from Yonex and Srixon.

With Colin Montgomerie giving its brand a boost with his high profile appearance in the Ryder Cup, Yonex is releasingnew Cyberstar VX irons, using the same graphite hybrid technology found in the Power Brid driver.

The fusing of steel and graphite into a hollow iron design claims better weight distribution, more forgiveness and velocity at impact.

As well as a new soft-feel ball, Srixon will be launching its 403 AD woods and irons and an XX10 '3' hot driver.

Recommended retail prices for all these new models have yet to be decided.
