Brits on course to qualify

David Carter - charity

Top English golfers are aiming to grab a foothold on the lucrative PGA Tour this week, when the qualifying school reaches its second stage.

Already Brian Davis and Greg Owen have made it to the final stage from December 1-6 in California, with impressive performances in Florida last week alongside Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark and Phillip Price from Wales.

This week it's the turn of South African-born David Carter from Surrey, Michael Kirk, Richard Moir and Darren Prosser when they compete in a series of second stage events.

Carter, incidentally, revealed this week that his innovative money-raising venture in in conjunction with PowaKaddy for the Marie Keating Foundation breast cancer charity, had raised around £3,000.

Each time, the 32 year old former World Cup winner recorded a birdied or eagled a hole in competition play, it earned money for the charity. David notched up 247 birdies and six eagles on the European Tour, averaging around 12 birdies each tournament.

Gary Harris

A new professional golf Tour is being launched in the UK - the brainchild of Gary Harris, former winner of the Brabazon Trophy and an England international.

The Jamega Golf Tour, which will rival the EuroPro and Elite Tours, demands a £250 membership fee but will offer the opportunity to compete in a series of 15 tournaments between March and September 2005 for a £155 entry fee.

"It's an ideal opportunity for aspiring professionals to learn their trade," says Gary. "At least 85 per cent of the entry fee will be returned in prize money and for a field of 70, that would mean a fund of £9,000, with £2,400 going to the winner and the 14th payer picking up £200."

Gary plans to hold a matchplay event for members throughout the year with a new car for the winner and a cash prize for the runner up.

First tournament is scheduled at Frilford Heath, Oxfordshire, on March 14/15.
