Gary McCord, a US Champions Tour winner, probably better known as television commentator and David Feherty's comedy side-kick, presents this easy-to-use instruction DVD that will help a variety of golfers - from newcomers to old hands like me - play the game better.
His no-nonsense style reveals much practical advice on 'How' to play most of the shots in golf rather than merely 'Why'. McCord delivers his instruction in a humorous and easy to follow style - just as he did, I'm told, when teaching Kevin Costner to play like a professional for the film 'Tin Cup' without having to resort to a body double.
Personally, I get a lot of benefit from this type of instruction because my preferred learning style is to 'watch and do'. And if it works, I practice it and stick with it until it becomes routine (Your winning score at Knowle is testament to that, Alan. ED).
This DVD certainly held my attention and a lot of good ideas will go with me to the practice ground.
I'm sure others might find this an unsatisfactory method of tuition as there possible aren't enough 'reasons why' to satisfy the theorists among us nor enough 'proof' to satisfy those golfing pragmatists!
Theorists and pragmatists will probably contest that some of the techniques are flawed, because there are other ways of achieving them.
For instance, when demonstrating the way to chip, McCord advocates landing the ball every time just a couple of feet on the green and running it up to the hole, varying the club used to achieve the distance (and trajectory) required. However, he doesn't reveal the amount of practice required to become aware of how far each different club will roll after landing.
Another method is to stick with a 7-iron when chipping and become as adept with it for distance as you are with your putter.
Apart from being unable to satisfy everyone's tastes, this DVD is very watch-able with plenty of positive lessons for those who have not developed their technique, are having specific problems, or may be searching for other ideas.

Summary: |
It's a good refresher on the elementary side of practical golf and doesn't become bogged down with the mechanics of the game. It's also valuable for newcomers, as they will gain the most from watching and doing. Simple it is - for Dummies it ain't. |
