Lynx flight cover

For the travelling golfer, it's essential when passing through the world's bustling airports to be reasonably confident in the knowledge that your vital equipment - your clubs - are safely packaged to hopefully join you undamaged at your final destination.

On my travels over many years I've seen and heard horror stories of not only equipment go missing, but it being spread across a baggage carousel - one item at a time - or merely roughly wrapped in cellotape.

I arrived at the Florida destination of one press trip to proudly show my colleagues the latest Callaway driver I'd been able to bring to review, only to discover the head snapped off, despite a head cover and a sturdy cover over my bag.

(I have since always travelled with a broomstick - at least two inches longer than the longest club in my bag - firmly in place to take the brunt of any over-exuberant baggage handling).

Over the years various travel covers have taken a bashing from bell boys, airlines and airport handlers, tearing holes in the robust material and knocking the wheels out of shape. So I was determined to find a replacement for a recent trip to the Canaries.

This Lynx model has proved a more than worthy successor and effectively in future will provide not only room for my bag of clubs and shoes but also for enough clothing for a short break.

Described as 'the ultimate wheeled travel coverall' it has more zips than a Texas post office, revealing at least seven outer compartments to carry spare shoes, balls and clothing. Some can also be detached to create separate holdalls.

There's also a couple of sturdy grab handles and a mid-belt to keep everything in place. The top of the bag is also well padded though from past experience, I will always carry my 48-inch broomhandle.

It's also easy to manoeuvre - better to push and steer rather than pull (it can tend to overbalance to one side at speed if you're in a dash to check in).

The Golfmagic Verdict
Rating: 9/10
Summary: At under £100 (I've seen it available online for as little as £69.99) it's an excellent investment if you plan to travel at least once or twice a year. The only concern is not to pack too much into it. Several low price airlines (including Ryanair) are already charging clubs as excess baggage and BA and GB Airways among others, plan to introduce some form of price structure for clubs in 2006.
