David, Steve submit 'reviews of the month'

Since David Plinston (39) gave up golf ten years ago to commit his spare time to business and his family of four children, he says there has been 'a huge leap' in technology with which he is only just getting to grips after returning to the game.

"When I stopped playing with an 11 handicap, metal woods, graphite shafts and cavity backed irons were just starting to become popular. I used to hit my Ping Eye2 5-wood about 190 yards off the tee because my 3-wood and driver were too difficult to use.

"Now I hit my TaylorMade R7 driver about 260 yards and even miss-hits go 230 yards. As for wedges with milled faces, sharp grooves and big, forgiving faces, the bump and runs and punch shots are very rarely played."

Consequently in the last 18 months, he has re-dedicated himself to golf with an eight handicap at Swindon Golf Club, bought himself a set of Bridgestone J33 Combo irons and submitted a winning review which has won one of two Masters Golf Ogre Trek-Lite holdalls.

In his review, David commented that 'anyone but the very worst can play these clubs.'

"They are a superb set of irons that any golfer from 18 to scratch can play. If you like the look of blades but want forgiveness in the long and mid irons, give these a go. If you are changing from cast heads to forged you must accept you will lose some distance because of the higher spin rates."

He adds: "It is up to the courses to move with the development in equipment, not by lengthening them but by letting the rough grow a couple of inches so it is more of a penalty if you miss the fairway. And by adding more protection to the greens, either by adding hazards or making them smaller or larger - after all it's not easy to get the ball dead from 80 feet with putter!"

Our other winner among the reviews submitted during May, is Steve Aitch (40), a 24-handicapper from Llanfechell in Anglesey.

He wrote about the conforming King Cobra SZ440 driver which, he claims, has sent his game to the next level.

"My clubs were low-mid range and so gave me a low-mid range quality golf game. I changed my putter and added a nice hybrid and that helped but since buying this driver, I can't stop smiling. It's like being promoted."

Stephen is an IT consultant who travels worldwide but enjoys returning to Anglesey to play on his favourite courses at Henllys, Holyhead, Benllech and particualrly Bullbay, which he describes as 'the perfect course for summer and winter golf.'
