Mizuno MX-900 irons review
Mizuno MX-900 irons

Welsh exile Alun Probert now lives in Sydney and from time to time sends us an 'electronic letter from Australia' with his thoughts on all things golf.

A former single-figure golfer at Peterborough Milton Golf Club, he now runs his own marketing company. Here's his latest contribution:

I've just paid a king's ransom for the best looking golf clubs I've ever seen. And I couldn't be happier!

I'm not sure when I first noticed these Mizuno MX900s. There's the banner link from this Golfmagic of course, but it wasn't until I wandered into House of Golf in Bondi Junction three weeks ago that I really noticed them. Even then I got distracted by a set of Ping i5s.

I even took a demo set out for a week but while I hit the ball well they were a little dull and unresponsive for my taste.

I think it was John Letters, with their original Trilogy irons who first had the idea for a set of clubs made up of a couple of blades, a few game improvers and a 3-, 4- and 5- iron that look like what we now know as 'hybrids'. No matter, these Mizuno irons take all that to a new level.

The clubs are forged and after six years of playing with Callaway X-14s, I couldn't believe the feel I got from the first wedge I struck out of the sweet spot. The other irons were pretty good, too.

In fact, after just one round with these beauties, I'm aching to get back on the course and I reckon a return to single figure glory could be just round the corner. If only I could putt with any consistency!

The mid-irons held the biggest surprise. I hit the 6-iron far, far higher with more penetrating flight (if that makes sense) than I have done for years and the 4-iron was also invitingly easy to hit.

But it's the short irons that make me drool. They're the perfect shape to my eye, classical lines yet not so skinny that they intimidate and the feel from a well struck Pro V1 ball is just out of this world.

The clubs weren't cheap, but with a first class fitting thrown in (shafts half an inch shorter than standard) I feel that I'm far more comfy over the ball.

I reckon I got value for money and can't wait to get back out there and give them another go.

If you're a UK exile and living in a far flung outpost of the world and want to tell us what golf's like where you are, I'm always happy to hear from you.
