Golfmagic Course reviewers of the Month

Hever Castle Golf Club
Hever Castle's distinctive clubhouse

As a railway conductor, Richard Copeland from Burgess Hill in West Sussex spends much of his day asking: 'Any more fares, please?' Perhaps he should consider 'Any more fairways?' after winning one of two pairs of Stuburt Profile S shoes we gave away for the best submission to our course reviews during October.

The 42-year-old, who plays off a 15 handicap at Hassocks Golf Club reviewed six clubs during the month, all of which will help Golfmagic visitors decide on venues they wish to visit among over 2,000 reviewed in our site.

At Rookwood he warned: "Beware the closing holes. As soon as you think you're nearly finished, the last two can wreck your card," while of Hever Castle he remarked: "It has a sense of quality the moment you turn up."

Richard also commented on 'excellent service' at Westerham, the 'superb clubhouse' at Mid Sussex and 'the friendly welcome' at Hassocks. However, he said Chartham Park 'really wanted to be a health club!'

On hearing of his win, Richard told Golfmagic: "I'm a five-day member and play in the midweek competitions but really enjoy the social golf, too. I also play in two railway golf societies, hence the number of course reviews.

"I have broken 80 a few times during the summer and feel that a good golfer is trying to break through. My ambition is to get to singles figures if only for a few weeks," said Richard who told us his career highlight has been a hole-in-one at Tilgate and playing St Andrews and other Open Qualifying courses in Fife."

Our other winner in October is Peter Davis from Rhoose in the Vale of Glamorgan, who reviewed Brynhill Golf Club which he described as 'Very challenging and demanding."

"White tees are a real challenge on many holes and put on quite a few extra yards. There's a good mixture of holes, with water adjacent to a few greens

"You need to be fairly straight and long and for mid to high handicappers a few of the par-4s play like par-5s due to the wind conditions and the slope of the fairways. A great course!" said Peter (43), a health and safety manager, who took up golf five years ago after retiring from local football ('my body couldn't take any more batterings!') and now has a handicap of 23.

" I have now come to understand, turning a bit grey and thinning on top, that golf is neither stress-free nor a nice country amble. I'm even more shattered, but the occasional good shot is worth all the frustration. I promise to look after the shoes better than I did my footy boots."
