Square drivers
Ram QUB3 and distinctive headcover

It was only a matter of time before more clubmakers jumped on the square head bandwagon, spotting potential to maximise the interest that the spat between Callaway, Nike and TaylorMade had generated among golfers.

While Callaway and Nike had championed the cause of square-head technology (indeed Nike's K J Choi has just won for the second time using the SasQuatch Sumo 2 driver), TaylorMade refused to join the square revolution, giving it just 90 days to blow itself out, while their moveable weight technology marched ahead.

In the meantime clubmakers among budget brands have latched on to the idea that by creating this new shape (displacing the weight in the head and forcing it into previously unexplored 'corners') suddenly the ball off the clubface tends to go more often where you aim it. The ball might not go as far (a trade off from the flatter profile) but it's more forgiving and makes the head less prone to twisting at impact.

For Ram, known for its innovation at a budget price, the opportunity is too good to miss and bright green QUB3 (CUBE-shaped) drivers with their distinctive, matching angular head covers are currently swarming into Ram outlets to be snapped up by golfers who believe £100 is a fair price to pay to turn heads on the first tee.

Square driver
Green for go - sole of the Ram QUB3 driver

This is the fourth square-headed driver I've reviewed and it's far and away the lightest (as well as the brightest with its emerald green Aldila NV 65 gramme shaft and two tone (black/green) New Decade grip, specially commissioned from Golf Pride.

And while it made my playing companions appropriately green with envy to see it in the bag, I have so far been unable to muscle it beyond their drives. Only occasionally can I generate enough height through the air to give me satisfaction. Usually it's a flat, running trajectory, inducing those distasteful 'Sally Gunnell-type' comments (someone in your fourball will enlighten you, surely)!

Though I might be one of the straightest, with this club I'm not the longest, so on occasions I need to show-off my prowess by hitting 'driver off the deck'. Again not an easy shot to pull off with any consistency though I've had limited success with low, bounding fades.
The Golfmagic Verdict
Rating: 7.5/10
Summary: Of the latest square drivers the QUB3 is the most attractive - especially now it's fashionable to be green and with its novel square-shaped headcover (the sock part could have done with a few extra inches of protection). I'm convinced the club will attract customers keen to try new technology with a well known brand and it will retain its value and esteem for several months to come. Maybe it will be one of those clubs that will provide the answer for those faced with trying to replace drivers that become illegal technology next January.
