Mizuno hybrids
MX-950 blended set features irons and hybrids

First impressions of a club can be deceptive. It's bright and shiny; you waggle it and it seems to respond in your hands as you set up for your first shot on the range.

Expectations are low. The chances of a low-fading thinned one that sends a shudder up your forearms when you catch the ball on its equator, are about 4-1 on in betting terms.

How refreshing therefore to pick up a No.3 utility club from a new set of Mizuno MX-950 Blended Hybrid set and flush it down the range as it covered the line of yardage markers and dropped to earth a few yards short of the board showing '200'.

Beginners luck? Not a bit of it. Four more arrow straight strikes followed so I grabbed the No.4 version and took it out on the course to see how it performed under pressure. I wasn't disappointed and discovered after a series of solid strikes from the fairway, that with one tee shot to a 180-yard par-3 at Bearwood Lakes that even the miss-hits go straight. The ball pitched short and rolled up within 10 feet of the flagstick.

I've never been totally sold on rescue clubs, preferring the safety of a 5- and 7-wood to replace the mostly redundant 3- and 4-irons in a set.

But even after such a brief introduction I can see how low and mid-handicappers are going to love the accuracy and forgiveness that these hybrids bring to the MX-950 set. It also includes three hollow-headed irons (5- to 7-iron) and three one-piece grain flow forgings (from 8- to pitching wedge).

I'm hopeful I'll get the chance of an extended run to try the rest of the set shortly, which Mizuno claims is unique in that it flows in length from hybrids to mid-irons, without creating uneven distance gaps.

The Golfmagic Verdict
Rating: 8/10
Summary: First impressions of the new MX-950 hybrids are of clubs that sit invitingly at address, and allow you to sweep the ball away with a soft feel and in a towering trajectory to land adjacent to their target with minimal effort. Of the hybrid clubs I've tried, these are hard to fault. .
