Luke donald using the MP-600 driver at The Dunhill Links
|
I'm really excited about the new Mizuno MP-600 Fast Track driver I've got in my bag.
Though I've loved the Mizuno irons, hybrids and wedges, I've never really found a Mizuno driver that I've liked before, which is why I've stuck with the Titleist 905T (9.5 deg).
But the most encouraging aspect of playing the Old Course, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns in the recent Dunhill Links Championship, was having the chance to 'play in' Mizuno's new baby.
Once I'd got the trajectory right and a few other things, with the help of the Mizuno boys on the Tour van, I was very excited with my driving.
The MP-600's technology revolves around a revolutionary fine tuning system that allows the golfer to slide two 8-gram weights into different positions behind the sole to give upto 15 possible ball flight options.
Different settings eventually finds the ideal set-up to maximise, distance, ball flight and control.
I found the MP-600 really special. The weights are perfect for getting the spin rate and launch angles just right for me. But the big thing is the shape of shot I can get. The driver sits up beautifully and I can work the ball both ways, plus it's very lively off the face, which has added something to my ball speed. At the top level it's just not enough to find the fairway, you have to find those extra yards, too.
I started with a promising 67 at Carnoustie, where I played really well. It was nice to return to Carnoustie because I hadn't played that well there in July at The Open. I hoped to build on a good opening, but nothing much happened after that and it was a case of one step forward then one back. I eventually finished in 23rd place - not what I was looking for after that bright start.
