Luke Donald's Diary

I'm really excited about the new Mizuno MP-600 Fast Track driver I've got in my bag.

Though I've loved the Mizuno irons, hybrids and wedges, I've never really found a Mizuno driver that I've liked before, which is why I've stuck with the Titleist 905T (9.5 deg).

But the most encouraging aspect of playing the Old Course, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns in the recent Dunhill Links Championship, was having the chance to 'play in' Mizuno's new baby.

Once I'd got the trajectory right and a few other things, with the help of the Mizuno boys on the Tour van, I was very excited with my driving.

The MP-600's technology revolves around a revolutionary fine tuning system that allows the golfer to slide two 8-gram weights into different positions behind the sole to give upto 15 possible ball flight options.

Different settings eventually finds the ideal set-up to maximise, distance, ball flight and control.

I found the MP-600 really special. The weights are perfect for getting the spin rate and launch angles just right for me. But the big thing is the shape of shot I can get. The driver sits up beautifully and I can work the ball both ways, plus it's very lively off the face, which has added something to my ball speed. At the top level it's just not enough to find the fairway, you have to find those extra yards, too.

I started with a promising 67 at Carnoustie, where I played really well. It was nice to return to Carnoustie because I hadn't played that well there in July at The Open. I hoped to build on a good opening, but nothing much happened after that and it was a case of one step forward then one back. I eventually finished in 23rd place - not what I was looking for after that bright start.

However, the driver was a real plus and I'll continue to tinker with it, which is exactly what it's made for.

I'm now looking for a big swing in form as we move into the last lap of the season.

The year had started well for me and I was very optimistic after finishing second in the Sony Open in Hawaii but then it all went pretty flat for a while. First the putting was a bit of a worry and then other things started to go wrong. I got a lift from finishing second in the Byron Nelson but apart from that and a few promising rounds, I've just not really been in the mix this year.

I felt in pretty good shape after finishing fourth in the Scottish Open so the following week at The Open was a real disappointment. I didn't get much out of the USPGA Championship either and recently the FedEx Cup tournaments were disappointing.

The objective now is to move back up the world rankings from my current 16th place. I was seven spots better than that this time last year after the Ryder Cup and I'm determined to get back up into the top-10 pretty soon.

After a short break I've got the Dunlop Phoenix in Japan, the Volvo Masters at Valderrama and Tiger's tournament, the Target World Challenge, in California. I've always played pretty well in the Volvo Masters and I'm aiming to go one better than my tie for second with Sergio [Garcia] and Padraig [Harrington] behind Jeev Milkha Singh.

Thanks for all your good wishes. It's nice to read how much support I have out there. I'm going to be doing everything that I can to Fast Track myself back to top form.
