The distinguished career of one of Nottinghamshire's most popular sportsmen, Ryder Cup golfer Lee Westwood, was celebrated on Saturday with the award of a honorary Doctor of Science degree, from Nottingham Trent University.

The award was in recognition of his 'major contribution to golf, both as a highly successful international player and also as an ambassador for the sport.'

As well as his wife Laurae and children Sam and Poppy, his mum and dad (Trish and John) were there to see the Worksop-born golfer collect his commemorative plaque.

Lee took up golf at the age of 13, turning pro aged 20 and made an immediate impact in 1994 with a series of cuts in his first season (22 from 27 events) enabling him finish 43rd in the order of merit to comfortably retain his playing privileges.

Westwood - great career

He announced his arrival on the world stage in 1996 with his maiden victory on the European Tour at the Volvo Scandinavian Masters and since then has achieved a number of notable victories not only on the European Tour but also in tournaments on the US PGA, South African, Australasian, Asian and Japanese Tours. In 1998 he won seven events around the world and the following year won the Volvo Order of Merit and top money-earner in Europe.

A keen fisherman, snooker player and car enthusiast, Lee has also represented Europe in five Ryder Cups and this year has already won the Valle Romano Andalucia Open and the Quinn Direct British Masters at The Belfry. He finished tenth in the European Order of Merit and is currently 26th in the World rankings after claiming a share of second place in the HSBC Champions Trophy.

Despite his international profile, he remains close to his Nottinghamshire roots as a big fan of Nottingham Forest Football Club and, like his parents, still plays regularly at Worksop Golf Club where he received so much support and encouragement in his early years.

Professor Yvonne Barnett, Pro-Vice Chancellor and head of the College of Science for Nottingham Trent University, said at the presentation at Nottinghham Royal concert hall: “Lee is without doubt an inspirational figure and it is a matter of great pride that our country has nurtured such an exceptional sportsman. We are genuinely delighted to be awarding him this special honour.”
