Weather at a glance: The Oregan weather station
|
The unpredictability of the UK climate, especially during the winter months, make it almost impossible to make advance plans for a round of golf. Even in the summer of 2007, persistent rain and consequent flooding made the game almost a frustrating write-off between May and August.
However, a new product claims to take the risk out of advance knowledge of conditions we're likely to face on the course or on the driving range and two Golfmagic.com members have each been lucky enough to win one.
Adam Carter from Peterborough in Cambridgeshire and Richard Dewen from Harlow in Essex each win an
Oregan's BAR688HG personal weather station for their course reviews, submitted to Golfmagic.com during
October and November.
The £49.99 device has easy to read icons displayed on an LCD screen offering a choice of 12 to 24-hour weather forecasts and giving up-to-date local predictions. This dual band weather forecaster uses barometric technology to analyse and predict weather trends to help decided whether we should wear polo shirt or sweater, windtop or waterproofs.
Adam is a 28-year-old teacher and novice golfer who says he has been 'hacking around courses' for about seven months and tends to play mostly at the Fen Course at
Thorney Golf Centre or around Cambridge.
However, he earned his prize for his reviews of
Old Nene Golf and Country Club at Ramsey ('excellent little course'),
Hemingford Abbots Golf Centre ('overpriced for what it was') and
Cambridge Golf Club ('flat, standard but reasonable value for money').
Said Adam: " I have very limited golf experience so far but have really enjoyed learning to play the game, though I'm not sure the people playing behind me have been quite so happy!
"I've particularly enjoyed a round I played recently with my future brother in law at
Bakewell in Derbyshire - a wonderful 9-hole course with superb views!"
Richard told us about two courses -
Blakes Golf Club ('loved it so I joined it') and the
Ardglass links in Northern ireland, which he describes as 'better than Royal County Down', its more famous neighbour.
'Pro shop is compact but well stocked and the bar
serves the best pint of the black stuff. Local seafood is outstanding.'
