 Barney Adams - demo advice
|
Barney Adams, the man who helped revolutionize fairway woods more than a decade ago, with his innovative Adams Tight Lies clubs - the forerunners of today's hybrids and rescue woods - has some sound advice for those considering a new purchase from a demo day.
He says golfers shouldn't be influenced in picking a gold category club over a silver category club - in other words a premium brand over a lesser known name.
"Playability of the club is a key factor together with industry buzz," he says.
"And don't try to hit a club more than three times. After a third shot a golfer will start making unconscious adjustments to correct bad shots that are coming from a club that isn't well-fitted for them.
"Watch the flight of the ball over all else. The feel and sound of the club are important, too but it is the results of the shot that are more important. If a shot feels good but falls short on performance, try another one.
Adams who founded Adams Golf more than 20 years ago, and believes the hybrid club as we know it today is the most significant improvement in play for the average golfer that has ever been made
"Try everything in a category at a demo day. You may be a fan of Callaway or TaylorMade clubs, but that doesn't mean the other manufacturers don't have a club that is right for you, too."
And wear the right shoes to the event.
"I've had women show up in high heels and men in leather-souled shoes. If you want to try new clubs, you should wear what you would play in."
