J B Holmes - Cobra's power man

With a fairway-splitting drive measuring 359 yards, Cobra staff player J B Holmes set up a play-off victory over World No.2 Phil Mickelson at the FBR Open in Scottsdale, Arizona at the weekend.

Holmes was using a prototype King Cobra 454 Comp driver (7.5 degrees), Speed Pro X3 (13 deg), and Speed Pro X5 (18) fairway metals and the latest King Cobra Pro CB irons (3-iron to pitching wedge) due for launch in Europe in April.

It was Holmes' second US PGA Tour victory, after finishing 72 holes at 14-under with an 13-foot birdie putt to force a play-off with Mickelson on his home turf.

The 27-year-old, using a Titleist Pro V1x ball, birdied the 18th again - this time from just eight feet, after a monster drive in sudden death, catapulting him from 197th in the world to 62nd.

While Holmes' distance off the tee was 302.5 yards on the measured driving holes, his average drive on all holes was 316.6 yards - top among all players competing that week He also hit over 70 percent of greens in regulation en route to his second win in the event in three years.

With a PGA Tour-leading clubhead speed average 124.92 mph, Holmes is second in driving distance on Tour (312.4 yards) behind left-hander Bubba Watson (316.5) and third in scoring average (69.39) behind Mickelson (68.73) and Stuart Appleby (69.10). He also moved into the top of the 2008 money-earners with more than $1.176 million in earnings. Just for the record Holes used TaylorMade's new Rossa Monza Spider putter.

Golfmagic will be testing the latest King Cobra in Portugal later this week and will report back on its findings.
