Step into the Hydromax

Ecco's Cool Hydromax shoes in brick colour

Just as football boots have transformed over the years from hobnails to ballet pumps, so have golf shoes. Even in the 1960s, golf footwear was heavy and clumsy - street brogues with spikes on the soles - and some of us even wore our cricket boots.

Today, while many professionals still wear the classic, stylish golf shoe, a new generation of amateur golfers are being tempted by something with much more 'street cred'.

The latest models from innovative Danish shoe manufacturer ECCO are a typical example, with its launch of the Casual Cool Hydromax line.

Taking its lead from high-street fashion this colourful range has been made from a combination of soft leather uppers and ECCO's 'comfort technologies' to produce a shoe that the company says 'stands out and performs'. It usesan injection-moulding process to 'ensure durability, comfort, shock absorption and water-resistance'.

The Casual Cool Hydromax is available in white/black, black/ice white, white/Espresso/sand and brick/white, costing £100.

ECCO has also revealed its Casual Pitch Ribbon line of shoes for women golfers, inspired by Tour pros including Carin Koch, Laura Davies, Gwladys Nocera, Juli Inkster and Sophie Gustafson.

The makers claim the shoes not only provide maximum stability but the double-layer insoles provide extra cushion and absorb heel force to reduce stress on the knees, hip and back.

They are available in coffee/white/light rose, titanium/white/raspberry, sand/white/bison, silver/white and black, priced at £90.

A British golf shoe brand, meanwhile, is celebrating back-to-back wins on the European Tour. Following Darren Clarke's emotional win in the BMW Asian Open (he designed his own Stuburt DCC Classics), Peter Lawrie marched a pair of Stuburt shoes to a dramatic play-off victory over home favourite Ignacio Garrido in the Spanish Open.

What shoes are you wearing currently - traditional classics or the modern athletic type of studded trainer? Do your shoes stand up to the British weather and demanding wear and tear or do you believe golf shoes ain't what they used to be? Tell us on the forum.
