If you're as passionate about your football and your favourite team, as you are about golf, here's an opportunity to combine the two by snapping up the chance to represent your team in a new golf tournament in Portugal next summer.
| |
'Golf Champions of Football', has been launched by DK events LDA to give football fans the chance to wear the colours of their favourite team onto the golf course, with the opportunity to be crowned the inaugural winners of the tournament, claim bragging rights and corporate hospitality at the football club of their choice and win £2,000 worth of prizes from Nike.
The qualifying stages take place at the Vila Sol Spa & Golf Resort at Vilamoura - one of the top 100 courses in Europe - in the Portuguese Algarve on three dates in May and June next year.
Golfing supporters will have to be quick to sign up as the tournament only allows one fourball for each football club based on a first-come, first-served basis.

David Jones, manager of Cardiff City
|
So, for example, if you're a Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool or Spurs fan and can raise the £2,400 per four-ball (or £650 per person or £1,250 per two-ball) you'd better register your club quickly to earn the right to wear the shirt. The price includes all golf, three nights, five-star accommodation, return airport transfers and a gala evening dinner (players are responsible for making their own way to Faro).
Each team of four will be entered to play in one of three group stages to play alongside fellow supporters, with stage and overall prizes awarded to winning teams, based on total stableford points from official handicaps.
Says Darryl Kenyon of DK Events: “The Golf Champions of Football is a wonderful way of bringing together people with the dual passions of two great sports- those who are ardent fans of their football team and who also enjoy playing golf at a competitive, yet friendly level with fellow fans.
“It is also a great opportunity for football supporters to show off their skills on the golf course, wearing their football strips with pride and pitting themselves against rival clubs.”

Neil Cox - plays his golf in the Algarve
|
Already the event has attracted the support four soccer legends - Cardiff City manager, Dave Jones, former ex-Aston Villa and England Under 21 defender Neil Cox; Sheffield Wednesday's Darren Purse and ex-Wolves striker, Don Goodman, now Sky TV football pundit.
“This is a superb concept and I am extremely excited to be taking part in what promises to be an outstanding tournament,” says Jones. “It’s a great opportunity for supporters to represent their club and I'm quite sure there'll be a lot of banter and ribbing going on.”
Cox, who now lives and plays golf in the Algarve, says: “I'm looking forward to being part of this event and mixing the two big loves in my life - golf and football.”

My son has played with Gary Penrice (ex QPR and Bristol Rovers) and Lee Dixon. Both decent golfers and top blokes, apparently. I am still hoping that I will get the opportunity to play a round with David Ginola.

I've played afew times with Peter Rafferty, captain of the mighty Linfield (the "Blue" bit of my board name).
At Windsor Park, where he was affectionately nicknamed the ‘Bald Eagle’, Rafferty made 331 appearances, scoring 42 goals, mostly from centre-half. During his nine year spell with Linfield Rafferty picked up 5 Irish League titles, 3 Irish Cups, 1 City Cup, 2 Gold Cups, 4 Ulster Cups, 3 Co. Antrim Shields and 1 Tyler All-Ireland Cup winners’ medals.
A real ‘colourful character’, Rafferty was sent-off 13 times during his Irish League career, but he also picked up the 1977 Ulster Footballer of the Year award. Once, in a Big Two game between Linfield and Glentoran and with Linfield winning 4-1, he sat on the ball in his own six-yard box and motioned the Glentoran players towards him. On another occasion at the Oval he was left flattened by a crunching tackle and was stretchered off. The delighted Glens fans cheered only for Rafferty to jump from the stretcher and shake his fist at the Glentoran support before returning to the pitch.
His long career was rewarded with a call-up to the Northern Ireland squad in 1979. He won his only cap coming on as a substitute against England and was given the unenviable task of marking the UK's first million pound player, Trevor Francis.
The man is simply a legend - and a handy 5 handicapper too!

I saw Tony Cottee, Glenn Roader and Rob Lee all at my previous club, Cottee was a really nice cha, always said hello to people, did not play with them though! But I did present Joe Cole with a player of the month award at the Bridge!

I see Sammy Lee most weekends walking his West Highland Rats, more target practice... Poor sod gets some stick lately over the dismal run of Liverpool, he takes it well though and usually fires back with intelligent stuff...

Had our Bonnyrigg Hearts Supports Club outing the other week and played with one of the young Hearts lads who has just broken into the first team played. THink he played of 24 and was runner-up in the stableford (I won that and the scratch, 8 over off 11 handicap). He was a bigger bandit than me. Craig Thomson was the young player.

Didn't Kevin Dicks of West Ham Utd turn Pro after his football was done? I am a member of the same golf club as an England World Cup winner and see him often (Norman Hunter) and I have played with a number of former players. During Brian Clough's short spell as Leeds Utd manager he tried to stop the lads from playing Golf. He arrived at Roundhay GC and met the Pro with "Are my lads here?" "And who are you?" was the reply. "Brian Clough, are any of the Leeds lads here?" "No" And off he went. As he sped out of the Car Park, the Pro turned to his assistant and said "You'd better ring Moor Allerton and warn them, they are playing up there today". Johnny Giles (2hcp) was a member at Roundhay and was always bringing some of the team up to play there.

I Played Teddy Sheringham, his son Charlie for 8 holes at my previous club. It was a slow day and I caught them up on the 10th, He saw the large Spurs badge on my bag and we got talking. Nice fella and pretty good golfer too! Also played Ronnie O'sullivan and Boxers, Billy Schwer and John Conteh in the Sir Henry Cooper Golf challenge last year and the year before.
