Fifty kilos of cocaine with a street value of £2million, has been found concealed in a consignment of golf clubs at East Midlands Airport.
Revenue and Customs officers revealed that it was their largest ever seizure of class A drugs at the Nottingham airport. The consignment had arrived from South America, on its way to a storage depot in Kent.
Eighteen separate freight packages were found to contain four golf bags, each containing a set of clubs with around 40 grammes of cocaine in the hollow steel shafts.
Paul Harper, senior HM Revenue & Customs detection officer at East Midlands Airport said: "This latest seizure of cocaine is a significant step forward in fighting the war on drugs. It’s the largest haul we have made of a class A drug smuggled into the UK through this airport and the success of this operation sends a clear message to organised crime gangs - our intelligence and detection skills are second to none."
No arrests have currently been made and Customs say that enquiries are continuing. Individuals with information relating to illegally imported and smuggled goods are encouraged to contact HMRC's confidential hotline number on 0800 59 5000.
