Master stroke in your garden.

I have been fortunate to have putted on Augusta’s greens and I can reveal they are like nothing you have ever experienced.

They were shiny with a sandy top, as if icing sugar had been sprinkled on them and to three putt from 20 feet was classed as ‘a result’!

As for the practice putting green beside the clubhouse, where players warm up before setting off from the first tee, on the day I tried, it was almost unplayable.

I spent over an hour on there and holed nothing longer than a four-footer. The borrows were so subtle and the surface so fast I held the putter so lightly in a search for the right feel, it almost slipped from my fingers.

But everyone wants to putt on fast greens – it’s one of the main reasons that brings you back to a particular course time after time.

Semi-detached Augusta.

So wouldn’t it be great to have a fast-running putting green in your own garden?

According to Dorset-based company, The Green Approach, you can install an all-weather green using their unique SofTrak system for around £6,600 (inc VAT) measuring 10 yards by 5 yards (450 sq ft). For something the size of your average golf club practice green it will cost just under £12,000.

SofTrak has been installed in over 3,500 locations worldwide and has been specifically designed to simulate the look, feel and performance of a real grass green.

The company says it’s also working closely with landscape designers and architects to provide practice greens in building and business developments, indoor or outdoor, of any shape or size.

Murray McMillan from Green Approach, commented: "60% of golf is about the short game and improving your golf around the green. With our all-weather surface, which can be built wherever and whenever you want, both golfers and non-golfers can enjoy it."

The SofTrak system uses a versatile synthetic turf which can be used to create challenging putting surfaces, with contours, undulations, with even bunkers and water features built into the design. The system requires little maintenance and can be brushed or rolled to change the speed of the surface.

Typical green venue.

Among the players endorsing it is Fred Couples, Masters champion in 1992 and who has yet to miss a cut at Augusta in 18 appearances.

So if you’re a golfer who has almost everything but wants to be as good as you can be, The Green Approach might just be worth a call for an estimate. Call 01935 389358 or email
