US Open champion Jim Furyk, whose swing has been described as a man trying to swat a wasp in a telephone box, is the new world No.3 after his win in the Buick Open yesterday.
He held off a group including Tiger Woods, Chris Di Marco and big-hitting Aussie Geoff Ogilvy by two shots to move three places and also up to No.2 on the US Tour moneylist with $4,401,313 – just $409,000 behind Woods who retains his world top spot.
Furyk shot a final round 68 while Woods carded a 66 to finish at 19 under.
Ben Curtis, playing in his first tournament since winning The Open Championship, fired a 67 to finish six under par and a share of 61st place.
According to the rankings, released this morning, world No.2 is Ernie Els with Vijay Singh, Mike Weir, Davis Love, David Toms, Kenny Perry and Padraig Harrington completing the top-ten ranked players.
Places 11-20 are fuilled by Nick Price, Phil Mickelson, Retief Goosen, Justin Leonard, Chris Di Marco, Sergio Garcia, Robert Allenby, Thomas Bjorn, Darren Clarke, Rich Beem and Bob Estes.
Adam Scott’s two-shot victory over Nick Dougherty in the Scandinavian Masters jumps the Australian 14 positions to World No.34 and a good chance of a place on the Rest of the World Presidents Cup team later this year.
Runner-up Nick Dougherty produced his best European Tour Performance and rises 65 positions to World No.202.
