Gallacher gets late call-up to Open
A Scotsman, who sat one place outside automatic qualification, plays at Muirfield due to John Daly's injury
SCOTSMAN Stephen Gallacher will play in this year’s Open despite thinking he had not qualified following the culmination of the French Open on Sunday.
The 38-year-old failed to qualify automatically by one place on the European Tour rankings but got a spot when John Daly withdrew due to injury.
"Gallacher is first reserve and will take his place in the championship," organisers said in a statement.
The European Tour offers five places to those in their top-20 who have not qualified. Following the French Open, where Gallacher finished joint-eighth, he was sixth in line for one of those places.
Gallacher, who is twice a winner on the European Tour, will play in the Open for the sixth time. His best finish came in 2010 when he finished T23.
