London based Kiwi Michael Campbell, who began last week ranked 90th in the world, improved to 67th in the most recent Official World Golf Ranking with his victory in last week’s Heineken Classic.
And after his victory at the Australian Masters at Huntingdale and the withdrawal of Japan's Jumbo Ozaki, he moved up to number 64 in the World Ranking and will tee it up against Tiger at La Costa next week.
The top 64 players on the Official World Golf Ranking as of February 14th will earn a place in the field of the World Golf Championships-Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship.
The victory, by six strokes over Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn, was Campbell’s second consecutive triumph and his third since November. Campbell won the Johnnie Walker Classic in November and the New Zealand Open two weeks ago. With both the Johnnie Walker Classic and Heineken Classic being co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia, Campbell currently leads both circuits Orders of Merit. And his win in the Australian Masters helped Campbell to meet the Tiger and we can expect some explosive golf in that first round tie.
The field for last year’s Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship, one of the strongest of the year, included 64 of the Ranking’s top 65 players. La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, USA will play host to the February 21-27 event. Jeff Maggert is the defending champion.
