Kuchar is your 2013 WGC Matchplay champion

Matt Kuchar denied Hunter Mahan the chance to win back-to-back WGC Matchplay Championships to claim his fifth PGA Tour title.

The 34-year-old beat his fellow American 2&1 in Sunday’s final at a cold and blustery Dove Mountain.

Kuchar took the lead at the fourth hole – the first time Mahan had gone behind in 169 holes in this event, a record stretching back to his first round clash with Zach Johnson last year.

The usually unflappable Mahan then bogeyed five and six, while a fine up-and-down from Kuchar for birdie at eight saw him four holes to the good at the turn.

Mahan halved the deficit at ten and 11, but Kuchar restored his lead to three with another remarkable scramble at 13. Mahan won the 14th after a stunning approach shot, and when Kuchar found the grandstand at the par-3 16th the lead was back to one with two to play.

But that was as close as it would get. Both found the fairway bunkers off the tee at 17 but a career iron from Kuchar forced Mahan – who found only more sand – into a concession.

“I’ve really got to give Hunter a lot of credit,” said Kuchar. “He got off to a slow start and I got up pretty quickly.

“But Hunter made a great battle and played some great golf coming in and he has a lot to be proud of, making the Championship Match two straight years.

“It’s great to be standing here to get this trophy and one of the more exciting things was to see my kids say, ‘Are we going to take that home?’”

In the third and fourth place playoff match, Jason Day beat England’s Ian Poulter at the final green.

Poulter had raced into a two-hole lead, but Day recovered well and earned a 3-up before surviving a shaky finish to cling on to third place.

That's what happens when you write things at 1 o'clock in the morning. Thanks Grant, "scraped" edited to "eased"

Monty's been very insightful in the gap... Who carries sandpaper!? Monty knows why!!

Also surprised how many Anser fairways and hybrids are in play..

Anybody know if Snedeker uses one too?

Sadly, I lost interest in this event halfway through. I know they are all great players, but  a Kuchar v Mahan final didn't really get the juices flowing. Such a shame that all the top players exited so early - you always expect a few shocks, but so many so soon... I think it detracted from the event.

I believe Snedeker is an Anser hybrid user:

Didn't see any of this competition due to being away at a show all weekend. Sounds like the big guns failed to deliver.
