Ian Woosnam tees off, watched by schoolchildren and Costantino Rocca at De Vere Slaley Hall hotel

De Vere Slaley Hall stages PGA Seniors championship this week and in partnership with the Golf Foundation has been encouraging school children across the North-East of England to try their hand at golf.

And Wingrove School pupils from Newcastle were on hand to join golfing legends Ian woosnam and Costantino Rocca to feature in Tri-Golf exhibition to further understand some of the basics of the game as well as learn technical skills and etiquette.

Said Woosnam: “Getting children involved in golf at this age is so important. The likes of Tiger Woods, and more recently Rory McIlroy, have proved that age is no barrier. To involve the local community in an event like this is fantastic and you never know, this initiative could unearth a future Major champion.

This is always a great week for us at Slaley Hall, the course is in great condition and it attracts a strong field,” added Europe’s last victorious Ryder Cup captain after smashing foam rubber balls using the over-size starter plastic clubs.

Woosnam is joined this week by Sam Torrance and defending champion Gordon Brand Jnr on the resort's Hunting course when large crowds are expected to take advantage of the FREE TICKET OFFER. All spectators have to do is pay £5 for car parking when they arrive on any of the four days (from June 25-28).

Said PGA sponsorship manager, Jim Croxton: “We can only afford to do this because of the incredible generosity of De Vere Resorts, who are not only staging this event, but are also the main sponsors."
