McIlroy -'the Tour's in good hands', says Langer

Former Ryder Cup captain and double Masters winner Bernhard Langer believes Rory McIlroy is almost the complete golfer – even at the tender age of 20. He watched the Ulsterman at close quarters for the first time during last week’s BMW International Open in Munich, and said he had natural but perfect technique.

The winner of 42 European Tour events between 1980 and 2002, told the Irish Examiner: "Rory has the most perfect technique I’ve ever seen in any player in the world. If I was to stand in front of him and he asked me ‘is there anything in my game I can improve on?’ I wouldn’t know what to say.

"He has a lot of acceleration through the ball and the only aspect that perhaps Rory needs to improve on is his putting and to gain a little more experience.”

He added: "The European Tour is in very good hands with the likes of Rory. It’s just wonderful to come back to the European Tour and see how much talent there is.

"Rory has such a bright future and all he needs to do is keep plugging along and stay healthy," said Langer, currently plying his trade on the the US Champions Tour, and finishing tied 9th in Munich one shot ahead of McIlroy.

The young Irishman revealed on BBC radio at Wimbledon this week that he rarely goes to the gym to work on his fitness.

"Last time I went was about a month ago. While I'm young and healthy the only reason I'd need to go was if I had an injury," said McIlroy.
