There used to be an equivalent in Edinburgh, "The Clubhouse". I went there a few times and was great fun, a few beers and golf in warm and dry conditions. And no nasty 3 footers (6 feet and in was a gimme).

Sadly, it went into liquidation, which was a shame. I think its a business model that should work, but the Edinburgh offering made a big pitch for a "proper" dining experience. I think a focus on drinks and simple bar snacks would have paid dividends.

Is there anywhere else in Central Scotland that offers this?

I am down in London occasionally with my work. If I am down and available for an evening, I'll put a post to see if anyone else wants to join me for an evening at Urban Golf.

Good points MG, and I agree - no publicity / marketing, I only found it by accident via a web search. A great idea and venture wasted.

I have visited both the Smithfield and Soho venues. I enjoyed it. It was £20 an hour (back then) but I think that was per bay rather than per person (I was on my own anyway). The shot detection seemed pretty accurate (certainly had my slice down to a 'T') but the big flaw/failing was the putting side of things which was a bit pants. That said, when I played, I just played tee-to-green and then skipped to the next hole (I wasn't that bothered about the putting anyway).

Each bay had a several racks of new TaylorMade equipment (with left and right handed, graphite and steel, ladies and mens variants) and the balls in the bay ranged from ProV1/ProV1x's to budget balls, so as an experience, pretty much everything was covered. One of the key things is the choice of course on offer: St Andrews, Royal Melbourne, Pinehurst #2, etc. Ok, now where near playing them for real but a decent facsimile (especially if you doubt you'll ever get to play the real thing in person).

There was mention of one of the future course upgrades being the hallowed acres of Augusta National. I don't know if they ever managed to procure those rights but with the likes of Tiger Woods 2012 now including The Masters venue, I hope so.

It was central London (where I was working away), mid February and the whole country was covered in snow, so any golf in a warm environment (and with a beer to hand) was welcome relief to the purgatory outside!

One in Manchester too, "The Green" I think, near Picadilly/N.Quarter. Really enjoyable couple of hours on a Monday night just before Christmas, all Cobra equipment. Not sure how accurate it is, I was hitting a lovely draw...

The Golf Lounge in Glasgow city centre

They used to have one at our local golf range, c.1984.

Tonk ball at screen, tonk ball from where it was supposed have finished up.........repeat until on green.

Once "on the green", the lights would come up, and you'd be instructed to put from A, B, etc. Hole out, then input how many puts you'd taken.

I think you could get a fourball around 18 in an hour, but memory has been dulled in the 30 yrs since......

May have been called Par T Golf, or similar.
