Matchplay event adds singles title
Final to be staged in Dubai
As the 2011 men's and mixed Matchplay Championship for amateurs reaches its climax, the sponsors - The JRW Group - announces that next year's event will include a men's singles with a further opportunity to compete in the finals at the Ernie Els' Club course in Dubai.
The new format joins the men’s pairs and mixed pairs events, which launched in 2003 and have grown in stature ever since as one of Europe’s largest amateur golf tournaments.
Open to amateur golfers throughout the UK and Ireland, and with Sky Sports cameras covering the latter stages, the Matchplay Championship offers the opportunity to experience the pressure and prestige usually reserved for the world’s best players, say the organisers.
“The Matchplay Championship has become one of the highlights in the golfing calendar and I'm sure the addition of a men’s singles will widen the appeal even further,” says John Woosey, managing director of JRW. “We’re approaching the latter stages of the 2011 event and it’s great to see amateurs travelling to new courses and enjoying competitive golf."
The regional finals of the 2010/11 Matchplay Championship take place at Marriott Hollins Hall near Leeds (North Final) on April 4 and at Marriott St. Pierre on April 6 (South Final). The 36 golfers who qualify will advance to Dubai from May 7-14.
