Northerners claim Trophy

Golfmagic forum's annual challenge

Golfers united
Entrants in the Sham Trophy

The 18th island green at West Midlands Golf Club provided a fitting climax to the Golfmagic.com North v South 'Sham Trophy' on Sunday, where regular visitors to the 'Shambles Club' forum thread met up for their annual challenge match.

The event, superbly organised by James Morrison (Jahmoo), was inspired by Jim Haworth (Sham 28), the site's most prolific poster with more than 11,000 visits in almost five years, orchestrating daily reports of life on and around his local course in Leigh and encouraging others passionate about the game to contribute to his thread.

More than 30 members took part over an exposed course where a chill wind played havoc with creaking golf swings and enhanced the sound effects of aircraft taking off overhead from Birmingham airport and trains roaring out of the nearby NEC station at almost one minute intervals.

While with a seven points victory (439-432), the Northern members wrestled the Sham trophy back from the Southerners who had claimed it at The Warwickshire last year, it was 11-handicap 'Southerner' from St  Neots, Tim Ellis - a member at John O'Gaunt Golf Club in Bedfordshire - who claimed the individual prize.

While his 39 points included no birdies, accurate driving and solid putting, combined to keep his score ticking along on greens that proved unpredictable after a heavy frost. The points also played a major part in helping his team (Sham, Jay-Jay and Bob Warters) secure the best group score (104 pts) among the eight fourballs which teed off.

The final hole, demanding a 140-yard carry over water to an island green, proved a stiff test for most of the players, especially into the cold, prevailing wind and attracted both cheers and groans from the watching gallery.

Most shots suffered a watery ending but it was Jo Power (Mae Hem) from North Shields, one of four women competing, who claimed the nearest the pin prize, clipping her 100-yard shot from the ladies tee, to within a few feet of the flagstick.

Thanks again to all those who competed in the North v South (Golfmagic) forum event for the Sham Trophy and to James Morrison for organising the tournament which ran very smoothly. It was great to catch up with old and new friends and, speaking as a Yorkshireman, it was particularly satisfying to help reclaim the trophy. Look forward to your continued support for the site. ED

"While with a five points victory (439-432), the Northern members wrestled the Sham trophy back from the Southerners"

Mmmm, lets not admit to those Southern Softies that you used this sort of maths to add up the score cards Bob.

(ED edit: Sorry Keith, more haste etc. But it's probably why I'm a journalist and not an account. However, never let the facts get in the way of a good story!)

It was worse than that Flooky, The Northerns only "won" it on a random scorecard selection cause the South were 1 player short.

just Claim

1Over, it was not the North's fault that one of your band chickened out of the meet  and, by the way, who was the one that drew out the "wrong" random card then?
Posted: 08/03/2010 14:56

Unfortunately that fell to me!

But I blame Mr I for giving me too many choices!

I mean "Richie, Pick a number between 1 -31" What sort of a choice is that?

Don't feel bad 1Over, I think I'm right in saying that you had to pick a "southern" score in order for it to count. In which case the only way the south could have won was if you picked my card - at best a 1 in 15 chance.

Nice article Bob and I'm not at all miffed that you missed my Birdie on the 4th hole!

"While his 39 points included no birdies..."

How does that work then?

Oh...and congratulations to the "Northerners".

Gross birdies, at a guess.

I'm a bit confused here, not unusual I know, my question is: is this the same N vS comp that Smufter organised last year at Whittington Heath or are  there 2 different comps going on?? I couldnt have played in this one anyway but this is the first I have heard about it..Is this the official comp now??? is the score one all??/

I think this one germinated in the Shamblers club thread and is not the same as Smufters.  I stand to be corrected tho'.

You are completely correct. Smufters is totally separate and is going ahead again this year. Also not to be missed.

Bill, just for the record the 39 points included one birdie - should have been 3

Pop a Viagra in your Shandy Taz. That should help

Anyone holing a decent putt on those greens was either "really close" in the first place or lucky!  (like me on the 1st!)

Playing tomorrow on some quickies... bet I putt the first few off the green!
